CBS has greenlighted an update of Hawaii Five-O, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci -- co-creators and executive producers of Fringe -- co-wrote the story for the pilot with CSI: NY executive producer Peter Lenkov, the trade paper reported. Lenkov wrote the script under their supervision. All three are executive producing.
The classic CBS procedural ran from 1968 to '80. Its trademarks: the opening music and the "Book 'em, Danno" closing line. The original series centered on an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police headed by Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and answerable only to the governor.
Kurtzman and Orci wrote last year's J.J. Abrams-directed blockbuster Star Trek reboot. Their feature writing credits also include the two Transformers movies and Mission: Impossible III.

Haha! There's a ten o'clock slot to knock NBC outta the ratings and give Law and Order a run for the money now that Big Jaw's toast. I'd say Zuckerman's having a bird as we speak. Onward network wars! |

Argggh. There goes the chances of a Magnum P.I. comeback.
I knew a Hawaii-based show was bound to get going soon. But a CSI:NY like police procedural after two decades of Law&Order will be pure dredge for all except those who want more of the same but in prettier locales.
I liked Hawaii Five-0. I'm just not interested in a remake of it now. |

So true. The inside-out autopsies are worse than dredge, that's where viewers are being desensitized, imho. All that blood and gore in hdtv jumping right out at you.
I've decided to watch Dexter. The anti-CSI Miami, the avenging psycho-path inside the force. |

Fresh off the press

Will the third time be the charm for CBS and Alex OLoughlin? Undeterred by the back-to-back failures of Moonlight and Three Rivers, The Eye net is courting OLoughlin to headline the freshly-greenlit remake of Hawaii Five-O, sources confirm.
Talks are ongoing, says the insider. CBS really wants to do another series with him.
The original Five-O which starred Jack Lord as Det. Steve McGarrett ran on CBS from 1968-1980. The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.
At press tour last week, CBS president Nina Tassler reiterated her strong desire to stay in business with OLoughlin. We love him, she said, and want him to stay around a long time. (EW)
