I haven't been keeping abreast of the security situation in the wake of the "underwear bomber". I had heard that international flights were requiring a four hour early arrival to complete the new security checks. Is this the case for flights leaving the US as well?

I don't see why you would need that much time. 3 hours before flight time should be enough. I doubt they are going to strip search you.

At the Detroit Metro Airport, near where the bombing (firecracker? Laughing) attempt occured, it has:

"ARRIVE EARLY: New security procedures may cause delays at the airline ticket counters and passenger screening checkpoints. Check with your airline for specific recommendations on how early to arrive at the airport. You may want to plan on arriving at DTW at least two to three hours before scheduled departure times, to allow ample time for parking, check-in and passenger screening." - http://www.metroairport.com/information/

They mention 2 hours. I wouldn't do less than 2 though. This gives you 1 hour for the unexpected and 1 hour to get your luggage checked in and find your terminal. If they made it 3 hours, a "dangerous" person could simply go into a bathroom hide whatever they want to use, then do a check, and then come back to the bathroom. These checks should happen fairly near the time of departure or else they are a waste of time.

Flew out of the U.S. on New Year's Day. It was easier than flying in on Christmas Eve. Thank God we didn't fly in the day after.

I think most of the additional security has been added to flights bound for the U.S.
