A friend worked for a Reading Town franchise in Busan a few years ago. The boss refused to return the diploma with this as his stated reason: "I hold onto the diplomas of foreign teachers so they won't run." When my friend called the "national headquarters," all he got in response was, "The boss can run his business how he pleases; it's not our problem."
So, my advice to my friends is don't even consider working for any RT outfit. |

I worked for a Reading Town in Guri City.
There were pluses and minuses. They were probably the most organized school I've ever worked for. They had a pretty solid curriculum and clearly knew what they were doing. From what I could see, the system worked too. The kids definitely improved their English skills. A lot of administrative work though (report cards monthly, book reports weekly, many tests).
The drawback was the boss. Biggest liar I've ever encountered (and there's a lot of liars in Korea). Wouldn't pay pension and medical insurance without a fight. Cancelled my medical insurance without telling me and then fought with me when I complained about it. I asked too many questions about my pay and suddenly went from being a good teacher to a bad teacher. Made for a horrible year. My co-workers, who were suck-ups, had a great year but reaped the benefits of my battles. Hopefully my boss learned from his mistakes and is not repeating them now.
It would probably be a good place to work if you got a school with a good boss. Or if you're somewhat naive and don't care about getting screwed. |

I worked at a Reading Town in Busan and it was a good experience. The teaching aspect was great as they have lots of books and a good structure. My boss was good so I liked it but each school could be different. Ask a teacher that works there for all the dirt. |

What? It sounds like the national headquarters doesn't give a hoot about what kind of scum are operating under their banner. |
