Actually it's not just Koreans... most of the Asian-Americans I know have an aversion to using the dishwasher as well.
I asked my boyfriend about it and the best he could come up with was "It's the culture" (standard response when he doesn't have a good answer).
Some of my friends have told me that they think it's "unclean" (which seems just slightly more reasonable than believing in fan death).
Thoughts? |

When I was viewing this place the korean family had a counter top dishwasher. Why do people on this board make stupid generalizations? |

Why are you so lazy that you think a dishwasher NEEDS to be used? I haven't had a dishwasher for over 6 years here and I can't imagine needing one. I wash all of my dishes by hand with no problems. |

Well I guess your one instance kinda shoots down her whole theory. Oh, wait.... no it doesn't. Good post, though. |

Unless they imported it, they're sold here which would indicate a market for it, which would mean Koreans use them.
Maybe the Koreans he knows don't use them. But someone is buying enough of them to justify selling them here. |

Dishwashers are built into many of the apartments here (including ours). As mentioned, there are many table-top models, too.
Koreans use them. |

Lies!
The dishwasher industry in Korea is fueled solely by lazy expats! |

When I was growing up we had an old one. Not sure where my parents got it, but you had to keep it immaculately clean or else the dishes would end up coming out with stuff on them. It was more work cleaning the dishwasher than doing the dishes. I think the new ones have all kinds of bells and whistles to make sure stuff doesn't stay floating around to keep it clean. |

Dishwashers and dryers are horrible, lazy and wasteful inventions. That and they take up a lot of space.
Oh, and some douche is probably going to say "my dishwasher is my wife." If only spliff started logging in again... |

Nah, I'm the opposite of a luddite. I'm one of those people that believes the singularity is going to happen in the next 50 years and eagerly anticipates it.
Whats worse than dishwashers are the invention of American suburbs. American-style suburbia is one of the most destructive and useless inventions in world history. I see dishwashers as being under that umbrella of things that make people fat and lazy.

Saying that Asians don't use dishwashers is like saying that Asians don't put carpet on the floor in their houses. It's not a "stupid generalization," it's mostly true, and there are reasons for it.
My Asian-American friends growing up said that their parents didn't trust that the dishwasher would get the dishes clean--they preferred to handwash them so they knew they'd be spotless, and then use the dishwasher as a drying rack.
That said, my apartment in Korea is a newer officetel, and it does have a dishwasher built in. Unfortunately it does not have carpeted floors. I miss carpet. |
