Just wondering if basketball is a popular sport in S Korea? Im assuming it is since its a pretty global sport. Anyways I love to play basketball and I was wondering how easy it is to find a game in Soeul and other places? Also is it on TV very often? Anyways finding a regular game of bball would help the homesickness and boredom. Any suggestions? |

I usually see it on SBS in the late afternoons and stuff. There's a pro league.
As far as getting a game going, er, no idea there. |

I'm a huge fan of the KBL(Korean basketball league), gives me something to get interested in while I;m here other than drinking. been to a few away games with some mates which is fun.
Don't expect high quality games. They are pretty bad and defence and referreeing is shocking at times. Thet also play the perimeter 3 point game mostly and dump it into the 2 imports for inside baskets. Usually the imports dominate with a few exceptions. In my opinion though not one Korean basketball player is NBA standard and only a few would cut it in Europe.
There are usually 10 games on TV a week(there are only 15 on average) so there is heaps of coverage.
The season is coming to a close next week and will be finished by early April. it will start again in October. The web site is www.kbl.or.kr. My team is the LG sakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also in regards to picking up a game it should be easy. I know of pick games all the time that are played and every school has a court(which you can use all weekend no problem) which can often by a good surface. |

NBA games are on tv sometimes, they come on here in the morning (live from the States) so if you work an evening hagwon schedule you should be able to catch some games.
Finding a game shouldn't be too hard, there are courts around but quality varies. |

Two suggestions:
1) if you speak korean or feel adverturous hit the university areas. They usually have basketball courts around. Or hit the areas along the han river if you are in Seoul. Ask to play. You won't have much problems.
2) if option 1 scares you too much, hook up with some GIs in Itaewon sometime...ask around if anyone shoots hoops. Good way to get ya on base too! |
