I don't think this is correct, but please tell me if you have some insight:
I will be working at a registered foreign language high school this year and I'm applying for an E-2 Visa. The school has never hired a teacher directly from the States so they don't really know what to do. They requested all the "normal" E-2 Visa documents to take to the immigration office in order to get my Visa Issuance Number...BUT they are also requesting a "Letter of Attorney" to act on my behalf at the immigration office because I can't appear in person.
Does this make any sense? I've never heard of an applicant for an E-2 Visa needing to give the school power of attorney, but maybe it's different for government-registered schools than for personally-owned hagwons? I don't think so, but hopefully somebody has some insight...
Thanks! |

Your employer does not need a power of attorney to process your visa. |

I've never had to do it when applying for a new visa but my last Employer did ask me to sign one last year when my visa was transfrerred.
I don't know if they really needed one or were just playing it safe but I signed it anyway and they took care of everything and collected my passport and ARC.
That said, the year before someone from my school did collect my ARC for me with my passport and they didn't need a Power of Attorney for anything.
Maybe you should call the Immigration Office? |

Heck no! Sounds like a new trick to take your money or something, should things go wrong. |

For a new E2 Visa the school does not need a power of attorney. In cases where it is a Visa transfer unless you can go in person the new school will need a power of attorney. A Visa transfer is actually supposed to be done by the teacher and not the new school but it's generally easier to have the school do it for you. |
