Do you really think all the children in your class feel that way? Obviously any sizeable class is going to have a fair number of disinterested students in it; English is a very difficult subject after all. But I find most classes have enough enthusiastic students in it to let you see some real progress. Keep the enthusiastic minority in mind and you'll cheer up.

That sounds suck Radius. Do you have the freedom of teaching methodology or are you tied down by your hagwon?

Don't prepare lessons..just go in and wing it everyday.

If only there was a Korea where a Korean adult was in the class to discipline the children and to explain the lesson when necessary, rather than engaging in thier neoconfuscist attempt to dominate the children and the foreign teacher. More than anything this is what is wrong with English teaching in Korean public schools. As for Hogwans it would be nice if Koreans saw some of the Korean Hogwan owners for what they are, criminals, and treated them accordingly.

Tell us more about the book, then.
Is there a possibility for self-paced study?
You could make an individual progress chart and display it prominently.
Might spark off a competition between students.
Kids love to be one-up, don't they?

My lower level 6th graders don't give a shite about engrish. I go through the motions and bust out busy work for them to do. They will be moving on to middle school so their days are numbered. I don't let the lazy ones bring me down. I have too many kids who want to learn.

The students don't care (especially older ones). But we're getting paid, so why should we care? Wave your little hat, smile your foreign smile, and make the mommies happy.

I've always had progress in at least half of my students.

You get a lot more satisfaction out of focussing on doing your job well (no matter the difficulties) than out of giving up and getting cynical. The time passes quicker too.

Sure there are always a few that don't want to learn anything...but unless you are really uncommitted...then its a reflection on them rather than you.

I'm thinking of rewards. What rewards do you give them?
Maybe you could give out stickers or pencils/pens at the end of the week to the two best students?
Something like that anyway. That will make them sit up and listen.
