Or you could be SMART and save money? I am living a lavish lifestyle and will have 35k USD put back after 2 years. Stupid and/or short-sighted people never get far in life.

I don't know. I have to pay 300 dollars in college loans a month. 150 a month in credit cards.....wait, how the hell do you suggest I make 35k in 2 years? Even if I wasn't stupid and short-sighted...I make 20,000 a year. That means I would be living off of 2,500 dollars each year and saving the rest...Even without loans, how do I pay for food and heating while still leading a lavish lifestyle on 2,500 a month? Guess I'm just stupid.

you can always get a substitute teaching gig.

Not that easy either, depending on where you live.

When I went back home last year i had a hell of a time finding a job. I really wanted a teaching gig. I am a certified teacher and love teaching. four months in I was waiting tables and volunteering once a week teaching english at the YMCA.

I have decided that when i go back in a little over a month i am going to start my own business. I will go back to teaching when it is a real possibility.

When I get back home i'm gonna learn to do real work. Like welding or plumbing or ranching or some other trade. No more following trendy office jobs and "success jobs" for me, I already tried that BS. I just want steady work and stable income, with a job where I am judged on my work and not how much brown nosing I do or how my attire looks.

you're either earning more than most of us or your idea of lavish is ramen and soju on Saturday nights.

Monthly I spend about:
150k on bills
150k on food
250-400k on entertainment
100k transportation

that leaves at the HIGHEST possible spending...saving around 1.2 million a month AFTER pension and medical.

Let's make it 1 mil a month and the rest of it is used for vacations.

12 mil + 2.2 (severance) + 2.2 (Pension) + 900k (runner insurance)= 17.3 million KRW by the end of the year.

How is that hard to do?

edit: my student loans are paid and I kept my credit in good standing. I never fell into the stupid credit/debt cycle.

When I get back home, I'm going to open up a Korean samgyupsal restaurant and every time a Korean comes in my joint, I'm going to annoy them with the usual questions:

1. Why did you come to America?
2. When are you leaving?
3. Can you eat spicy food?
4. Do you want a fork?
5. Where do you work? How much do you make?
6. Americans are very kind.

And if they complain about anything, I'll tell them that they "Just don't understand the culture" and that it was a "miscommunication".

Not sure how you live on 5,000 won a day for food, but good for you. Sounds lavish. Or we all ought to learn the "chew more, eat less" diet.

And, I hate to do it, but... 35,000,000 won is more like $30k USD.

reactionary, I will save that much THIS year, but also THIS year I bought things like a 46" Xcanvas, tenor saxophone, etc.

I usually cook at home during the week, and honestly during school days I don't eat much when I am at home because that 밥 fills me up. Plus, I like to watch my figure. Unless you're going to BK or McD's 24/7 I don't understand how you could spend more than 150k. Also, I like Korean food, so I guess that helps. 10 kg chicken breast on gmarket is 60k...I mean really.

Hide your cash in your parents bank account and go on welfare. Once on welfare you'll qualify for food stamps and government housing. The Welfare office might offer you an EFL job since many welfare clients are immigrants and are just learning to speak English.

I earn (after taxes) 1.9 million won a month.
I send home 1 million won a month for bills.
I spent 1.2 million won on a winter vacation to Europe.
I spent 150,000 on bills a month.
Probably spend 300,000 a month on food.
250,000 a month on entertainment.

I just don't see how I could possibly save 35,000 dollars in 2 years. Please teach us how to not be stupid.

Well that sounds like a bulletproof business plan. Are you looking for investors?

Make sure you make it "fusion." Maybe actual smoked bacon instead of sam gyup sal. Oh yeah, and napkins.

I am going to say it: you are probably under nourished. 150k a month on food? Seriously, that doesn't seem right at all.

My typical eating habits are more on par with 10k a day, so in a 30 day month that is 300k. Do you eat three meals a day? Even rice in Korea isn't cheap. 10kg of chicken isn't that much if you are eating chicken every day.

I have a friend who says stuff like this all the time. He started college at 24 and then dropped out his sophomore year to go to technical school for motorcycle repair. I guess he read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and took it literally, haha.

Whatever makes you happy, though. I feel ya with the "real work" thing. I've been doing an "analyst" type job for about three years now and I am really sick of how abstract it is, how my "work" is mostly excel spreadsheets and e-mail messages, and how the only thing that matters is my boss's opinion of me.

When I go back home I'm probably not going to switch to a manual trade, but I'm going to work on developing a particular skill or licensed qualification that will allow me to do actual work with concrete results. For me that probably means law school, but I have a few other ideas too.

You better stay here for another year and save a bit more money.
