| Has anyone gone through the process of attaining a criminal background check for a visa recently? Does the process have to last as long as they say it can? Yikes! I had no idea it would be such a big deal. |

| I think it depends on your state. I am in Missouri and got it done in about 20 minutes. Had to drive an hour and a half each way to get it though. |

IF you are Canadian AND in Korea then yes, it will take 4-5 months to get one from the RCMP.
There are other options (like the Winnipeg police service) that are MUCH faster.

| 4-5 months?! Mine was from the RCMP and I got it in the mail in about 10 business days. Just find a fingerprinting office and take them electronically there. They send it to the RCMP electronically and the process is MUCH quicker. |

That is for US citizens.
In Canada (for Canadians) they are all CPIC searches (federal).
The only difference is the police agency providing the search.
Some places (like all major cities) don't have the RCMP as the police service. |

Maybe it's just an advantage of small-town living, but I got mine through the RCMP in about 10 minutes. |

If you are a Canadian overseas (not in Korea) do not go through the RCMP...huge hassle.
I did the Winnipeg police service option. It was much quicker but when my Dad took it to the Korean consulate in Vancouver for the stamp they wouldn't accept it because it was out of province. He wound up taking it to the RCMP and they handed one of their own over real quick. Problem solved. |
