Depends of the feeling of immediate palpable threat.
You can feel safe in a warzone if you have 2 armed guards walking from A to B with you and a trench of armed soldiers dug in trenches ringing your house.(I have).

However you can feel more unsafe if you're walking down the street in a peaceful country when a protest is happening and bottles are flying through the air.

The most dangerous place I have ever been was the US stock market. I almost had a heart attack while in it.

Yikes !

Well, I'm going to Mali in the summer and I hear that they now have a cell of Al-Kaeda there. They have already kidnapped two people and I think killed one.

But I look like the native people there so maybe I shouldn't fear beheading Confused

Bamako, Timbucku, and Sokoto in Nigeria should be the best trip yet. Anyone been there ?

Nope, the danger is pretty self-explanatory. Still, I bet you've got some great stories...

Had several run ins near a place called K Road in Auckland, NZ. A friend stabbed there and rolled down an embankment and left for dead, a fight in a take out for me, seen a few beatings and a hit and run mugging at a money machine ... Seen heaps of fights in bars and clubs.
At the same time have had very peaceful times around the city. Perhaps it's just luck. I think a lot of it is the bars. Away from the bars peace is easier to find.

I was in Beirut in 2005 when Hariri was assassinated. I've NEVER felt more out of place, and scared for my safety/life. Stuck in a hotel room for 36 straight hours = no fun. My girlfriend and I were snuck out eventually in the back of an old Jeep.

More recently, South Oak Cliff in Dallas is pretty hairy - as is Manila late in the evening. There are dangerous shitheads everywhere to be sure, but some places are more risky than others.

Gentrification has slowly begun there. I have a hunch it won't be so bad in 10 years or so.
