Just wondering if anyone can recommend a decent place to stay in Rome. We don't want a hostel as it is the first day of our honeymoon. We will only be in Rome for one day, then we are on a cruise the next day. So we want to be close to everything. Any recommendations? |

It seems a shame to only stay one night in Rome. I lived there for four months and love the city. I also worked for a high-end hotel-booking website and covered the city of Rome for the website, so I have a bit of knowledge about it. The links I'm giving you are from that company, but honestly you'll probably find better rates elsewhere.
My two top choices for a one-night honeymoon stay:
Il Palazzetto -- THE place for wine lovers. Even if you don't end up staying here, you should consider coming by for a wine tasting/class. Right at the Spanish Steps, which is the Apgujeong/Beverley Hills equivalent neighborhood of Rome, but with a lot of revelers often gathering at the steps.

Residenza Napoleone III -- One of the best hotels in the world, perfect for a honeymoon. This is a once-in-a-lifetime type of hotel stay, which is great since you'll only be there one night (as much as it costs, it might be for the best). It's intimate, private, and luxurious. You'll really have to be willing to splurge, though.

You could also consider:
Daphne Inn -- close to Barberini and Trevi Fountain (great central and romantic location). Lovely boutique hotel at a much more affordable price.

Hotel Lord Byron -- Palatial, arty, and romantic area. Near Villa Borghese and the park, but a bit of the walk to most of the sights in Rome.

Casa Howard -- I almost don't want to recommend this because the owner could be a bit of a jerk when I talked to him, but he's a good guy (very Italian) and this is a top boutique bed'n'breakfast.

I would recommend staying close to some sort of landmark-even if it's the train station. The streets are confusing and they change names like every block. We even stopped to ask police officers how to get to our hotel and they didn't even know how to give us directions. When we said it was by Termini train station they knew how to get there. If we hadn't been near Termini we'd probably still be wandering around Rome. |
