Wow...
I get spam from recruiters from time to time. Sometimes I delete it and sometimes I take a quick look.
The first job listed in one I just received (first=best?) is pasted below. That works out to 160 hours a month???? What happened to 120? is this the new standard? And for an education major that salary is total crap. WTF?

8 classes a day, 40 minutes? That's only 5 hours of teaching time, which is 25 per week. Doesn't seem that bad. I would check if it is going to be a split schedule and how many kindy classes there are. It's not 160 hours though. |

sure it is. one class= an hour.
even if it's only 40 mins, most fair places will say class=an hour. Prep time etc certainly means it's at least 50 mins total output.
and 9 to 7 pm is really long with no real options for a split shift if you're doing 8 classes.
9-12 is 3 classes.
then let's say you get an hour or two for lunch, maybe start at 2 pm and you have 5 classes. So no split shift. |

They are not going to start at 2 for a kindy class. If we are using 1 class = 60 minutes, then that's 40 hours with 13 hours of prep time.
I don't have to be here for 40 hours at my current school, but I still have to do the prep hours somewhere like at home. The actual teaching doesn't come to 40 hours, and therefore you can't make a 160 argument.
Try all you want though. Good luck. Personally, I would look into the job more. It has the potential of being bad, but if you go in at say 11am and teach 2 or 3 kindy classes, then you have about 3 more later on. Sometimes, those get canceled. I have always had classes not show up for some reason or another.
I have always had a split schedule in that case (except for my current school). So, I would teach a little, go home and come back to finish the day. I like both, but I don't like to teach kindy classes. That's the only reason why I definitely wouldn't take this job.
I would need to meet with the school and find out the exact schedule before I ruled it out. |

That doesn't mean you have to be there. What they do is want you to be available during those hours. I used to teach 2 classes in the morning, then go home and come back at 3pm. I would finish my hours, but from 11am-3pm, I could leave. Sometimes my teaching hours would shift, 2pm-6pm, or 4pm-8pm. If I finished early that day, I could leave early. I have NEVER been bound to the full length. |

my new hagwan's really great, very reasonable hours, the staff are nice. my friend found it for me when i was back in canada, i was really lucky to have someone who could search that out for me cuz other wise it would have been more of a gamble, this way i've got reasonable hours and a very nice staff. |

It's hard to know whether they expect you to actually be there from 9am - 7pm. If you made an arrangement about going home between classes, perhaps acceptable. But if I saw those hours in a job ad there's no way I would consider it. That's a ten hour day and, whether you are working or not, it's too long. While I often prepare at school, I liked having the option of preparing at home. |

What about unpaid prep time? You never worked at a hagwon. |
