Ain't nothing like the good ol'days. So many great people! Sam Cooke. Cab Calloway. They could all sing and dance it up. |

Cab Calloway is going back a bit too far for me, but 60s motown and 70s jazz funk definitely ... Aretha ... Stevie Wonder ... Herbie Hancock ... Miles Davis ... Gil Scott Heron ... I could go on. Emotive, funky music. |

Oh yes, Sam Cooke, sing it. Loves it, I do. And Sharon Jones and Amy Winehouse certainly both hold their own (they might owe a LOT of it to their shared back-up band.
I stumbled on this great series of re-releases from small labels across the States, mostly from the early 70s, I think, called Eccentric Soul. Well worth checking out. And, if I can plug a friend, there's a great singer from Toronto named Treasa Levasseur who taps into a bit of a Stax vibe. |

That Betty Boop cartoon with Cab in it always stuck in my head as a kid. |

Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. My goodness, talk about some beauty.
Motown was pop to perfection. Good music, Superlative vocals, style, beauty, performance.
Todays R&B stars have nothing on the Motown girls, save Monica circa 'Angel of Mine' and 'Street Symphony'. |

The Eccentric Soul stuff is just amazing, it's like motown but more interesting to listen to. The guru turned me on to Louis Prima a while back, and he's worth checking out, especially if you already like Cab Calloway. |

I love jazz from 20s-40s (hot jazz only, though, not stuff like Glenn Miller's In the Mood) Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet (I LOVE Sidney Bechet!). I love Motown and Soul music too. Stuff like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls. But I think these names have all been mentioned already here. I dislike rock and roll stuff in between, though. 50s music is not my thing.
Blues is also great, but most of my favourite blues artists also fall into the hot jazz category, like Count Basie, Sidney Bechet, Billie Holiday, etc. And jump blues is good, too.
Basically anything that makes me want to swing dance (lindyhop)/groove is good. Anything jive-ish or Boogie-woogie is not my bag. |
