3 women were caned in Malaysia for adultery. I feel even less like I want to go to Malaysia than I did before.

Malaysia is a Muslim nation. This is what Muslim nations are like. We all know this is what they are like. Don't expect a lot of outrage around here about it, though. After all, it didn't happen in Israel.

Oh back before your time it would have gone on for pages and pages. But we've all been warned.

btw, young_clinton, post the article will you? Curious where in Malaysia it took place. And I personally have enjoyed my two trips there.

And as Leslie pointed out, it's a Malay thing perhaps. Very Happy In fact, Singapore keeps tracks of the # of canings each of its school gives. I remember reading an article about some elementary school improving. What were the signs of improvement? Higher test scores (obviously), and a decrease in canings.

The good ol' days.

Malaysia is a very wacky country. I've been there many many times from coast to coast. The Chinese are left relatively unmolested (they run the economy and the Malay's run the politics) but the state can be very hard on Malay's who leave or dissent from islam. Like Singapore, they will whip as punishment for a wide variety of crimes. It is hard to believe we live in a world where adultery can be punished by a whip.

They should change their name to Maynotlayia.

Yeah, I think it is usually when the ruling party feels threatened by the Islamic fundie parties, there is a crackdown on Malays' "sinful" behavior. Gotta love populism.

The opposition dude is in court over a sodomy charge. Which is like a school yard taunt "oh yeah? Well You're GAY!"

It wasn't for adultry, it was for pre-marital sex. And the article notes:

Quote:
The three women, aged 17-25, said they turned themselves in after feeling guilty for sleeping with their boyfriends before marriage and getting pregnant, The Star and the New Straits Times newspapers reported

Maybe they just are into S&M? Very Happy

Plus Malaysia dishes it out to men as well:

Quote:
Caning of men for such offences as rape, drug smuggling and staying illegally in the country is common. It is administered with a thick rattan stick on bare buttocks, causing severe pain and leaving scars.

Cheaper than long prison sentences I bet.

This is more of an eyebrow raiser:

Quote:
Another woman, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, is still waiting to be caned for drinking beer in public.
