As an American, I am tired of hearing this. I realize that many Americans voted for Bush, but why the general bias against all Americans? Americans politicians have made some disappointing diplomatic decisions, its true, but I, like most of you, have no direct control over the governmental decisions of my country. We are not a hive mind; why is hating Americans OK when when it comes to other countries a person is judged on an individual basis?

The Irish are drunks!
The French are wimps and snobs!
Russians are even worse drunks than the Irish!
Germans are perverts!
Polish are stupid!
Canadians are boring!
English people are ugly!

Etc.

All cultures have stereotypes. I think the only people who make these generalizations are ignorant folks who have no interest in meeting new people or learning about different cultures. Anyone with half a brain knows that people are individuals and not silly broadly painted stereotypes These same intelligent people know that it's not okay to judge an individual for aspects of their culture which they do not agree with or have control. Why bother with ethnocentric jerks?

I hated Americans when I was 16. I was fully into Che Guevara, I thought George Bush was a capitalist pig and that Americans would have to be idiots to vote for such a guy. Then I grew up and actually met an American and realized that they were pretty nice folk.

Now, anyone who would vote for Obama. They must be idiots! What a pack pack of pinko socialists Americans must be!

Leaders always have a target on their back. America has had a long run of power and it has left us with many fans and many enemies. Any country as large and as powerful as America is going to rife with corruption. Many people are simply commenting on the facts. Some people go beyond to blame the American people who are in fact made up of all the world's people. Despite the fact that we democratically elect our leaders, it is very difficult for Americans to have any real impact on the decisions in our country as it ultimately comes down to capitalistic interests and supposed national security. There's nothing you can do about it but rationally defend your country and try to show that there is much more to America than the criminal deeds of our powerful.

Well, that and become more politically active and fight for a more just tomorrow Wink

For that matter.....EVERYONE has a target on their back...someone, somewhere, someplace, will find fault with you and stab you in the back, bad mouth you, make stories, try and turn someone against you or some other BS.

Like anything, it's all relative. Americans can be pretty dumb, but after traveling to and/or living in 20+ countries I have yet to see anyone else lighting up the Genius Scoreboard.

OP: what you are doing is fueling fire by defending the indefensible.
To stop fueling the fire, you can :
-counter-accuse the accuser or
-ignore the accusation or
-take the Texas approach and be proud of the American Idiocracy.

The pure irony of it. Once a taxi driver told me Americans are too 무식해.

How ironic. That taxi driver must be so well educated that he ended up driving a cab.

The USA is a big country with a lot of diversity, so it stands to reason that there will be a lot of geniuses, as well as the bible-thumping morons that usually end up in charge of the country.

OP..just relax a bit bro. I'm sure you had some bad confrontations or something to get you this excited, but honestly who cares what someone thinks. If they're ignorant enough to make a generalized statement like that then you know they obviously are not worth noting. In this case, I'd either just show them that I'm not a moron, or I'd tell them to f**k off and have a nice day.

Most people I've met abroad, and most of this was during the Bush years, accepted me as an individual person and seemed to judge me on my individual traits. That's not to say I was never challenged because of my countrie's domestic/international policies, but it was never really a personal attack, though I could saw some people feel that it was. Just know your shite about international relations, and you'll smoke 99% of people who dare to challenge you.
