So, today I went to the Immigration Office to renew my VISA (this will be my 3rd year at the same school. I wasn't expecting it to be too much of an issue. I had all my docs in order and got there nice and early. I had kept my health check aside and was going to do the same for the copy of my CRC. It's been my experience that if you don't hand that stuff over, then they don't ask for it.

Fatally, I forgot to extricate the crc from the pile of documents I handed to the Officer. Nearly instantly he seized on this doc asking for the original. I have no idea where the original is. I'm fairly sure I gave it to immi back in '08 but who can remember? So, at the time he says "OK, but I have to check with my superior".

So, I leave the office thinking all is good. About 2 hours later I get a call from my co-teach saying I need to have the original copy of the crc. Both she, and my area co-ordinator have tried reasoning with the guy, but it seems I'm going to have to produce magic and come up with this mythical document (which immi has seen at some point or they wouldn't have given me a VISA in the first place.)

Luckily I am from NZ, where, I'm led to believe, the crc process is much easier than else where. So, if I haul ass, I might be able to pull victory from the jaws of defeat.

This is really just a venting post. Feel free to wish me luck or hurl invective, if you please. At the end of the day, it's my fault for not either reading the immi officer's mind (I'm guessing he didn't get layed last night), and having an original copy of a doc I already gave them, or being more savvy and not giving a copy of a document that would just confuse the poor man.

Whoa is me. Mad Sad Confused

My sympathies. The paperwork and time it took for me to get an F-2, and all the whining my university did about the delay!

This January, I was all set to go on a family vacation to Malaysia for two weeks. Three days before we're leaving, the local education office tells my wife that my daughter has to pick up her school form in person a week later or she can't attend the school. We canceled our vacation so that she could pick up a form from a pile and go to a fifteen-minute orientation at the school, where they told her to "study hard."

The glories of Korean bureaucrats. They get a special plane in Hell, level number 8'3"-#72j.

Yup. This is what it comes down to. Some bureaucrat having a bad day. And people say we need more of these guys! Good grief.

Immigration lost/can't find your original and to save face have decided to blame you.

When they first instituted these new regulations they promised to keep a "database". But 2 years later they still don't keep anything on file. There must be a black hole under their desk that sucks up all important documents. Rolling Eyes

I know. That's why I'm kicking myself for not pulling that doc out of the pile. It wouldn't have even been an issue if he hadn't of seen it. What can I do though? What are the chances of him backing down?

Is this public school? I didn't need a CRC for re-signing. I thought that was only for the initial E-2, now it's just a health check to prove to the school you're not a HIV spreading, drug smoking dirty foreigner.

Yea. PS.

That's the thing. He didn't even ask for the medical! This is at the immi office. My Education Office wanted a medical, for the reasons you stated. This is for VISA renewal. I'm going back tomorrow to try and straighten this situation out. It's a pain in the ass , 'cos it's a 20k taxi fair. Mad There and back. Double Mad

I'm thinking the reason he is giving me shit is this; kind of a long story. I went home to NZ last year for summer vaca. When I was coming back to KOrea, there was a big kerfuffle at check in. The kid behind the counter wouldn't let me board because I couldn't actually prove I had a VISA. The VISA in my passport said it expired in 08. There was no stamp or anything that said I had a new one. I showed him my ARC, but it's the same deal, except it has the new VISA renewal written in felt tip on the back. I can kind of see the kid's point. I could've written that shit on the ARC myself. I had a re-entry permit, but it's kind of confusing. There is more evidence going against me than for me. So, I'm bricking it at this stage. The kid calls over the Korean dude from Korean Airways, obviously this guy doesn't know shit, so he says I'm not legit. I'm filling my pants at this stage, but manage to refrain from clanging their heads together. In the end they ring around and I'm cleared. Some how. I'm still not really sure what happened.

So, I didn't want this situation to reoccur when I (hopefully) head back home again for summer vaca. I kept asking the immi dude (my smoking hot KGF was doing the talking for me) to give me a stamp or something to prove I would have a new VISA. He was really reluctant to work with me. In the end I said I would buy a new ARC. He was even reluctant to do that. The dude was getting pretty shrill by this point. He snarkily said "It will cost 50,000won", I said "Fine". So, in the end I walked out 100K lighter but happy enough. Only to have my lunch ruined by my co-teach calling to drop this crap in my lap. So, I'm guessing I royally pissed this guy off. Hopefully he visited a Anma this evening, so that he will be in a better mood when I see him tomorrow. Crying or Very sad

Ah..suddenly its a lot clearer.
Your crime has been to have a hot K-g/f in tow.

No true son of Tangun allows a foreigner to steal a daughter of Tangun if he can help it.
Reminds me of that uncovered scandal of British immigration officials granting unlimited visas to hotties but giving their attendant boyfriends 1-day exit orders.

Haha. I'm going back tomorrow, on my own (she has to work), hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

Just as a side note, even if you haul ass...

The first time I applied for a CRC it took 7 working days to be processed and receive the apostille. Then, I applied (in NZ) for a CRC on Dec 27, and at the end of Jan I was calling to find out where it was... they were only processing Dec 21 at that point. I had to reapply with proof of urgency (flight scedule etc), and they had it done overnight. Luckily the authentication unit only takes a day as well.

Just in case they actually make you get another...
