So I just got my new monitor delivered that I bought on GMarket. I bought this monitor:
http://english.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=132764145
[데이시스템(주) ■판매①위■] [리얼 22인치166.900원]DS2288W (56cm/22인치WIDE/16:10)LCD모니터 삼성패널/DCR10000:1/고정종횡비/초슬림
Clearly says that monitor is 22 inches WIDE. But when I get the monitor I find it is 22 inches DIAGONAL and only 18.65 inches wide. I am a bit bummed cause it is less than an inch taller than my old monitor (though much wider).
Am I a tech idiot for not knowing that WIDE actually means DIAGONAL when buying monitors?
They have a 24 inch wide (= DIAGONAL) 16:10 monitor which is closer to the size that I wanted for about 50,000 won more. I am thinking to return this and exchange.
Anyone ever do a return to GMarket? Is it no questions asked, satisfaction guaranteed; or only for defective parts?
Thanks,
Drew |

Since you asked...Yes. All TVs and monitors are measured diagonally. The WIDE means that it is not 4:3 format, but rather 16:9 or 16:10. |

Doh!
OK, I agree that the mistake is totally my fault and I accept full responsibility. Given that...
If I were in America I would send it back and say "Sorry, I was wanting something bigger"; and the store would say "No Problem, thank you, come again." Is that about the way things go in Korea. Do they return things as commonly as Americans? I guess I have problems being assertive; don't want them to think "Here's another wagookin with a dumb exchange, we should just close that English website." |

Going by how much my co-teachers complain to service employees wherever they go to get extras/faster/better service (my vice-principal took me and a few co-teachers out to dinner at Outback and I don't think I've ever seen people squeeze so much extra service out of a restaurant--we left with no less than TEN bags containing loaves and loaves of bread), I wouldn't worry about this at all. Get a Korean to help you with your return.
I had a monitor fail on me within a month of regular use and told my co-teacher. Class was literally a minute away from starting and she immediately called Gmarket and then the merchant and started tearing some poor guy's ear off about how their defective product severely tarnished Korea's national image and how his company should be ashamed of selling shoddy products to foreigners.
All I wanted was a straight exchange. Instead, I got an upgrade Good game Mrs. Kim! |

Well, at any rate, it looks like you got it for a pretty good price. I just got a 23inch LG that my Korean friends ordered for me online(not sure from where). They bought the exact same model 2 months ago for 370K, but now it is selling for 270k, which kind of ticked my friends off. The cheapest I had seen at Homeplus was 320k, so I thought I'd done pretty good until reading your post.
My old monitor was the old style, now best used as a boat anchor or something, so I am still pretty happy. |

Check the merchant and see where they are located. You can take it there and tell them you want to exchange it.
Or, you can call them and tell them you will mail it back to them. Make sure you get a signature confirmation on delivery so you have proof that they received it. Once they get your monitor back, your account should be credited. |
