More potential disaster news.Sad
Quote:
EWA BEACH, Hawaii A tsunami threatened nations around the Pacific Rim on Saturday, with an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Chile sending potentially deadly waves across the ocean as fast as a jetliner.

Quote:
Waves were likely to hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores within 24 hours of Saturday's quake.

After the sirens are sounded in Hawaii, people in coastal areas, such as tourist-filled Waikiki, would then be instructed on a possible evacuation. The sirens will also be sounded again three hours prior to the estimated arrival time.

McCreery said he didn't know how big the waves will be, but expected them to be the largest to hit Hawaii since 1964.

Japan has stepped up to the plate and will be blocking the tsunami for us. Apparently it'll be here by around 1 pm and we'll know more after 6 am after it passes by Hawaii.

Is this a significant threat to Hawaii? That picture you posted Mith doesn't look good, though I don't know what looks good or bad re: tsunamis.

You beat me to the punch. I thought that was a little ironic too - Japan "protecting" Korea.

I live out by Gangneung. Do you think I might notice a change in the water levels if I go take a gander down at the shore? I'm not keen on getting washed away, though.

It appears the tsunami waves won't be as bad as feared:

Quote:
Russia canceled a tsunami warning after waves that hit the Kamchatka peninsula proved not to be dangerous, Fox News reported, quoting RIA Novosti news agency

A tsunami triggered by the earthquake swept through the Hawaiian archipelago at about 7 p.m. Eastern Time, doing no damage and easing fears that the U.S. West Coast might be at risk. The tsunami warning in effect in Hawaii was canceled shortly after 7 p.m. Eastern, according to reports.

Earlier, tsunami warnings had been issued for 50 countries and territories across thousands of miles of the Pacific Rim after the quake.

Apparently the quake was 500 times stronger than the one in Haiti.

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

An earthquake strong enough to actually speed up the Earth's rotation by a discernable amount is pretty scary.
