One of the benefits of going to the Philippines to learn English is that it's cheaper than going to countries like the United States and Canada.

This is old news. A lot of them also come home complaining about the accents, food, poverty, etc., claiming they'll never go back. Additionally, I've also had students head down for month-long programs and come back with English skills that have actually regressed. They go down with a Korean group, only study and socialize with other Koreans, and essentially walk away with nothing. I'm sure this isn't the case for everyone, but these trips seem to work about as well as the English villages do here. |

As far as I know, businesses teaching English in Philippines are actually going bust.
Due to the lack of any sort of quality or service that can be provided in that country. |

One of my best Korean friends studied in the Philippines for a year. His English is very good, not perfect, but better than 95% of Korea. I think it's a good idea for them. |

Yup, I know a guy who owns a school there and he is having serious difficulties.

Don't know why they pour into the Philippines but they have reservations about Filipinos teaching here. |

My cousin's son spend 3 months in Philippines. He came back completely different. He turned into a giant slacker. He stopped studying and only cared about playing video games. |

what happend is, that Korean businessmen saw a way to exploit their own people as usual. history repeating itself..
so they opened up schools, marketed them as great establishments, gullable mothers sent their kids, and then the scams were exposed.
charging high prices, offering great service, in return they got philipino teachers who were not even that good at English themselves, no solid curriculum, bad food, bad service and no eduction. more and more scams arose, more and more schools opened up, more and more stupid mothers sent their kids there in hopes to boost their childrens English to give them a headstart.. reminds me of 90% of the hakwons in this country just scams!
Rule number 1.. Don't trust a bald barber , he has no repsect for your hair
rule number 2.. Don't trust a skinny chef, he doesn't eat his own food..
so .. In Korea..
Don't trust a school owner who doesn't speak the language he is offering to teach
Dont trust a school owner who has never taught a day in his life!
Dont trust a school owner who doesn't hold an Education degree!
if we closed down all the hakwons in Korea where the bosses fall into the above category there wouldnt be in hakwons remaining!!
the problem is not education, the problem is its become such a lucrative business that businessmen are stepping into the roles as educators but don't have the experience and know how.. but becuase they pump so much money into their francises they serve up bad quality but still get the people.. reminds me of Starbucks or mcdonalds... total garbage but people are lining up!! ohhh the power of marketing!! |

Very well said. Worked at an international school there (Philippines) run by Koreans. They put me in charge of PE and ESL . The place was a total disaster from the get-go. I knew it and my wife knew it but at that time we really needed the money. I managed to survive about 3 months then quit when the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) closed down the school for a day because of some unknown reason. We asked why but getting a staright answer is as elusive as...well ya know. School opened back up the next day. I didn't care. With all the stupidity that was going on I had it. Anyway a few months later the place closed down. Really sad. There were some really great Korean and Filipino kids there. I know tuition was extremely high but the school lasted only 7 months.
So much more could be said but I'll stop here. |

I work for two schools, one owner has no degrees, the other has an MBA from Columbia.
Both schools are excellent, both are excellent teachers.
