Sounds like you need friends.

I do have friends. I just checked Facebook and it says I have 5 friends. How many do you need?

Maybe he just has other hobbies besides checking every 10 minutes on how many people responded to his witty status comment and new barcelona travel photos or what that guy he met in a bar four months ago had for dinner last night.

AAAAAAHHHH!!!!!! If ONE more person claims that FB is only for talking/sharing with people you hardly know I am going to go on a rampage. Are you people that dense?! Sure some people have 500+ friends 400+ of which they barely know. But others have it to keep in touch with actual friends that oh I don't know may be in their original country.......

I use FB to keep up with my friends back home and my current coworkers. I also use it to spy on people I went to HS with that I wasn't even friends with.

What?

However, I hate apps. But you can just hit the X and choose "block blah blah blah" and never see another Farmville/Restaurant City/Mob Wars etc update again.

I'll confess, sometimes I get lonely and just want some form of human interaction. I guess I can just post here instead ... Twisted Evil

I don't hate Facebook, but there's something about the way people use it as a verb that I find irritating. "I'll Facebook you later", "I Facebooked him" etc.
Mind you, I find a lot of things irritating. Like children and Christmas. I'm just a grumpy old SOB!

I am soooo glad that you can block all the ridiculous apps ie Farmville, Mafia whatever, butt plugging, cafe land, etc. HATE them, whenever I see one I promptly block from ever seeing it again.

And if your only form of communication with someone is Facebook then you are not friends.

So we do agree a bit more than I previously thought CJ1976. But you are a grumpy old man....

Press the Hide button on the people who write continuously about EVERYTHING!
They wont know you've done it and you will still be their friend
Works for me!

Thanks! I summarize the answers to my original question as 1) for whatever reason they don't care if you respond, and 2) what they say doesn't matter a whole whale of a lot anyway.

Too bad - I've always thought those "banal" comments were intended as conversation starters...

People are rarely honest about why they use something like Facebook.......

For many, it's a basic need to feel you have friends.......for others, it's pure noseyness. Eavesdropping on other peoples lives.

For a lot of people, it's both!!

Exactly. Its very easy to edit what gets into your news feed. You can block apps or everything a persons posts. Or just delete them. Facebook is an awsome way to keep up with your friends while warming your desk and trying to look busy.

I have a friend who posts an update every time he eats something. Or at least he was doing that 3 months ago when I blocked his updates.

FB is ok in moderation....

I use FB to keep in touch with friends that are scattered all across the globe. It is central and useful for that.

However, FB is also a tool for the socially inept and for the generation of people who feel the need to share every painfully boring detail about their lives through stupid status updates.

To each his own really.

Twitter can be a tool to kepp up with certain things: news for example. However, the flip side here is that it becomes even worse than FB for idiotic tweets on a persons state of mind or on what they are doing.

This 'need to stay connected' is amusing because it sometime shides a painful inability to function independently without sharing to the world you are having a latte at starbucks....

Such is life.

I'd imagine it would serve as a hell of a diet plan for some.

The final straw was when he started posting his dinner choices in the afternoon, with an update later on so we'd know which one he decided to eat.
