Ok guys i've finally landed in korea and have been having a harder time than I thought finding gyms in my area.

Anyone know of any judo, bjj, wrestling or any grappling type gyms in the Anyang/Pyeongchon/Beomgye areas?

Or, if you know of any type of martial arts gym (cept tae kwon do) in that area please let me know.

Thanks

There's a Muay Thai gym just outside Geumjeong station. From the CGV you can take either the 11-2, 88 or 31-7 to get there.

Hong Soo Hwan's gym in Seolleung (Kangnam Area). 02-568-7845.
Address is 897-10 Daechi Dong.

Case you ain't knowin, he's a world-famous pro boxer from the '70s and really good guy. His English is also excellent and the gym is totally foreigner friendly. Enjoy!

There's a new martial arts gym that just opened up in the Itaewon area. It offers:

ITF Taekwondo (the original, "North Korean" style of Taekwondo, geared towards self-defense as opposed to sport)
Hapkido
Muay Thai
Grappling (mostly no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)
MMA
Yoga

All instruction is in English and Korean.

Don't know if this has been mention but there is a MMA gym near Konkuk University for anyone who wants to try it out.
Go to childrens grand park station, exit 4 go straight about 30 feet and Korean Top Team should be on your right on second floor.

Fee is 100,000won per month and they have most of the gear required. At minimum you need exercise shorts and tshirt. Classes are 11am to 1pm, and 7pm to 9pm(I think). Professional classes are at 330pm. Classes are from monday to friday.

It's a good school and the morning teacher speaks English very well. The night coach doesn't but there are many students who speak English and can help you out.
The school leans a bit more towards grappling. Most of the coaches have wrestling backgrounds(greco and submission). Striking is usually taught 1-2 times a week

Honestly, the only gripe I have with KTT is the morning coach misses class sometimes(1-2 times a week) but he has his pro fighters teach class in his absence. They can't speak English well but they are very good at fighting.

Thought some of you might be interested in an article that appeared in the Joongang Daily (part of the International Herald Tribune) today about learning martial arts in Seoul:

i don't know if that video was made seriously or for humor so I will assume you were serious.
If you are going to make a video and demo your forms, wear appropriate clothing or something looser(lose the denim jacket and shoes).
And focus less on if there are other people around. If they see you and the video camera they will probably be able to guess what you're doing.

The Way Martial Arts Academy is near Noksapyeong Station, on the same line as Anam Station (brown line #6). Noksapyeong is 10 stops from Anam, so it would take only 20 minutes.

Muay Thai classes are MWF 8:45-9:45pm and Saturdays 10:15-11:30am.

There are several women in the class, including myself. Smile
