|
|
I recently interviewed for a position with a school and they offered me a contract a few hours after the interview. Unfortunately, I have had some issues arise with my family over the past couple weeks and decided that it would be best if I wait a couple months heading over to Korea. I felt terrible about this, but I had to tell my recruiter that I couldn't accept the position and was looking to apply for a public school position for August.
Needless to say the recruiter was not too happy with me. I understand that I led the recruiter to believe I was very interested in this position and just turned around and said 'no thanks' (it was far from an easy decision). I've told the recruiter that my only intent is to apply for a public position from here on out and I understand if they no longer want to work with me.
My concern is that the recruiter has all my documents and that I've screwed myself over in finding a future position, with or without the same recruiter.
Have I shot myself in the foot here?
Is there any likelihood that I get my documents back (I asked to her to send them to a friend in Korea)?
Any repercussions to expect (I didn't sign anything, but the recruiter said they had already paid for my visa application) ? |

What documents does your recruiter have exactly?
Sounds like the recruiter has lost face big time, and came up with some BS about paying for your application.
Forget about it. You didn't sign anything... |

| Since it's all my E-2 visa paperwork, I am concerned. However, It's well-known and large recruiter based in Korea, so I would like to think that they would be willing to return my documents and just choose not to work with me. |

| Send me a few thousand US dollars and I'll go strong arm the bastards and send you your documents. I'll let you pay half first and then half after I send you photos of the documents in my hand before sending them to you. |

I'm sure recruiters have plenty of people who back out at the last minute...I doubt your case is anything special. At least your didnt waste your time and the schools time any longer than you needed to.
I dont know about getting your documents back as the recruiter could care less about a candidate that isnt going to make them money.
However, as far as other recruiters are concerned, if you're someone they think they can place, they'll probably overlook your previous situtation if it means they can make a comission.
Lots of people use multiple recruiters and then dispose of the ones they dont find desirable, so I dont think you'll have a problem finding one that will want to work with you.
The competition for a teaching position is a completely separate animal, so dont even worry about that yet.
I hope your family situation turns out ok. |

About the same as a snowball in hades.
PS. there IS NO visa application fee so your recruiter is out nothing but some time and embarrassment. |

Also, it's not uncommon for schools to delay the start time or back out altogether even after you've already signed a contract. It's good to be responsible about your end of the deal, but don't get the wrong impression that "backing out" before you even signed a contract is anywhere close to a breech in business etiquette or whatever. There are tons of jobs and tons of applicants in Korea's EFL industry. The lack of accountability on either end is the trade off for the ease of finding new jobs/new prospective teachers. |

What documents did you send?
Did you send your original university degree?
As far as your CRC and uni transcripts, don't worry. You can get new ones. If you did send your original diploma, then you might want to ask your Korean friend to go meet the recruiter in person and ask for it back before he throws it in the garbage. OR tell him that you will take one of his job offers, but not at present.
NEVER EVER EVER send a recruiter or employer a document that you can't get replaced! Never! Send them a legal copy. They don't need the original degree. Too many people don't get them back, or get them back folded in half, torn, with a coffee stain on them, or with stapler or hole-punch marks/holes. |

| I still have my original degree. The recruiter actually said they would be willing to send my documents to a friend in Korea. Looks like I might be dodging a bullet. |

If you have the original degree diploma, then it's no big deal, even if he did keep the other documents. It's cheap to get legal copies of your diploma. You may need another CRC anyway depending on when you start applying for jobs again. The university transcripts are only useful if they haven't been opened yet.
I'm glad that you got them back, but if it happens again, don't sweat it. Other than your degree, the other documents are easy to replace. |

| Just a suggestion. If you're going to be applying for another job in the very near future, then ask your friend to hold onto the documents for you. Then you can ask him to just forward them to your future employer to put through the visa application process. It will save you the time and money of resending them again. |
