Everyone has a place in the world that they dream of going to. Maybe its a warzone now, or too much unrest. Maybe its overrun with the pox or controlled by crazy dictators.... or maybe you just dont have the money or the cojones to go but you wish you could go. |

My favourite travel writer, Eric Hansen wrote a fantastic book called "Motoring with Mohammed" and I've been wanting to go to Yemen ever since. I guess the safety factor, and the notion of getting kidnapped has put me off.
Pakistan is on the radar. I mainly want to go hiking there but the best season is mid-year when I get no or next to no vacation. I'm not so worried about the safety issue though, you'd have to be very unlucky to get caught up in a terrorist attack.
The Patagonia region of Chile looks great too, just getting there is way too expensive. |

Morocco and Italy. I've always wanted to see Pompeii.
Also countries in Africa look amazing but difficult to travel in. Maybe South Africa someday. I hear it's stunning. |

Really? What draws you there of all places? I was born in Pakistan and I thought about doing a visit to the fatherland when I was going across China last summer. I made it to the Chinese Karakoram and got as close as 250 km, but I didn't go for reasons of safety.
I met lots of people that were coming from there, though. If you're interested in the mountains in the north, it's a great place, but I think you're taking an awfully big risk. There's lots to do in India, China and Nepal. Kidnappings are also common in Pakistan. Three distant relatives have been kidnapped in the last few years.
I did my dream trip last summer: Shanghai to London by land. I have lots of ideas now, but no dream trip. |

Granted, some areas in Pakistan are very dangerous, but I think the humble tourist staying out of the hotspots and not sleeping in high end hotels should be OK. This is based on keeping up to date on travel forums by real travelers, not sensationalized bombings in Waristan or other areas close to the Afghan/Pakistan border, or violence against the military.
I hardly think India is safe anyways, Mumbai bombings, Delhi bombings and there was a bombing in Pune, India in a popular bakery the other day. Never been to China, but I still think it's easier to die in a traffic related accident in Asia than at the hands of a bomb IMHO.
I'm mainly interested in the Karakoram range, which is apparently safe and mindblowingly beautiful.
I've spent 5 months in India, and have been to Nepal already and would like to check out some more Muslim culture, some of which I got a taste for in Kashmir on the Indian side. I mainly want to do some tent based hiking in what looks like the most incredibly spectacular mountain range in the world. |

That is a great book. You might also want to read "Baghdad W/out a Map." It was written 20 years ago, but it is still fantastic, and was one of my inspirations to go to Yemen.
Sana'a is safe, but not sure about the rest of the country these days. And even if most of it is safe, I don't know what travel restrictions are in place. I was fortunate to be there when things were abnormally stable (1st half of 2004). |

Funny I was about to write about Africa. I'm going to Timbucku, Mali in the summer.
Niger, Mali, and Sokoto/Zaria, Nigeria will end the trip. Always wanted to go and very interested in the muslim culture, food and lifestyle.
Tons of inoculations and I plan to just blend into the people this time, as opposed to being the foreigner in places like China and Mongolia |

Follow the Amazon from its source in the Andes to the eastern coast. Explore the rain forests, or what's left of them, before they all but disappear. I've been told it's a mighty dangerous trip, but one that still grips me. Patagonia, too. And definitely the Cook Islands in the South Seas. |

India for many months. Africa for many months. RTW trip lasting as long as I want, finances permitting. Buying great experiences is the only reason why I wish to be wealthy; not simply for gold, golf clubs, and a Mercedes. Teaching won't make you rich, but it gives you time off to experience life a bit while other jobs just give you money to show off materialism with little experiential opportunities. Go Fly Away. |
