| I did enjoy getting a Makati Hard Rock Cafe shirt. Makati is worth visiting just for the shopping. The Durban street Inn is the best place to stay and cheap in case you do decide to go. |

I have to disagree. After living in China, I felt like I was in heaven while in Manila. Granted, I stayed at a 5 star hotel in the downtown area, but when I went about in the daytime it wasn't as dirty or crazy as posts on here would have people believe. |

You sir, have just described what I call the "Yemen Effect." What is that? When you go from a real crappy place (such as Yemen) and go to another place that is slightly less crappy (say, Cairo) and think it is AMAZING.
That is why I cannot give an accurate description of Kolkata. After coming from Bangladesh, I thought the city was fantastic. Obviously few people would agree with me. This effect is also why a number of people I know have hyped Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa: it is very nice compared to other African cities, but in reality isn't anything amazing.
Excuse my serious digression from Manila. |

I was told repeatedly that the city was dirty, the air quality was horrible and that the place was dangerous.
I guess if I compared it to my small town in Canada, it wasn't that nice. However, I think going in with low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. The fact that I could compare it to where I am in China, just made it that much better.
There is also the other factor of going somewhere GREEN while your home area is GRAY. That is going to increase one's impression of a place.
It may be the effect that you think it is. If I had been told how awesome the place was and then got there, I would have thought differently. However, it exceeded my expectations, and to me that is all that is important. |

It's still a dump compared to 7000 other really great places to go to in the Philippines....
The only thing great about Manila is that it is a GREAT place to leave.

I was there on business, so in that respect it wasn't so bad. If someone was going to go there on vacation, I would agree with you 100%. There are many other nice places to see on the islands besides Manila.
Oh, and their airport is one of the worst I've ever had the pleasure of using, and that is saying a lot considering I've used some pretty shady ones in the Caribbean.
I had to line up outside the airport and have my luggage scanned and documents checked. (I was lucky in that regard too, as I left while it was still dark out.) Then another line up for checking in, another for paying a terminal fee ($16 for what? Paying all the people that make me stand in line ups?). Then immigration, then another security check. Oh, and I wasn't impressed that they checked me twice more between the security check and the gate.
I thought I was in Manila, not Israel. I guess with the elections coming up they think there is going to be some terrorist activity... |

Pretty much agree with most posters here...Manila's pretty much a dump.
If you must stay there...stay in Makati.
In fairness, I did see two sights in Manila worth seeing: the U.S. Pacific War Cemetery and the Chinese Cemetery(tombs of wealthy ethnic Chinese). |
