I'm not sure if you folks are buying bargain bin glasses, or if I'm going to the wrong places (or just not bargaining).

Frames alone seem to cost 80,000 won in the three places that I've visited. I was quoted 125,000 Won for a pair with lenses. While those were thin lenses, I don't think that they would have been given special coating.

Is it easy to find glasses for less than 100,000 won? If so, where would you go in Seoul?

I've always gotten the families glasses at E-mart.

I don't get name brand (well, except my daughter did get Harry Potter glasses but I wouldn't know the price in Canada). That might make a difference.

Itaewon? Main road. Went there once (4 years ago). Got the glasses next day : 50,000 won. Still wearing em in fact. Might be time for a new pair soon. These are still good but a bit scratchy.

I live in Daegu, but I was able to find cheap glasses both downtown and in my neighbourhood. A key is not to go into stores that look expensive. So if you live in one of the ritzier or trendier areas of Seoul, try to go elsewhere. Then find yourself the cheapie non-designer frame section.

Success! Smile

Another tip - you don't need to know Korean to get glasses at these places. Most optometrists will at least know english numbers. If you don't know enough Korean, get a Korean to write down certain things you want like 'anti scratch, anti glare and thin lenses'.

What language did you use to interact with the people in the glasses shop?

I can't speak Korean. How would i get an eye test, buy glasses (and specifying that i want thin lenses, anti scratch surface etc) if i dont speak the language? Drag a korean speaker in with me? Did your place have an English speaker?

I think I could tranlate it for u. Just buy me a bottle of orange juice.

I've been paying between 50,000 to 150,000 for my glasses. The brand name ones, like Armani and Versace, are the same price as back home.

The anti-reflective coating is standard and is included in the price. These days I've noticed the glass shops trying to up-sell some new optix lens (or something like that), it's a bit more expensive than the standard lens. I think they claim it's more scratch resistant and easier to clean.
