|
|
Hi all.
So I've done quite a bit of searching and have essentially come to the conclusion that I will be unable to teach in S. Korea but wanted to check with the experts here just in case.
I have a DUI from my freshman year of college which was about 6 years ago and I was have an obstruction of justice charge(bs btw, long story, but either way I was charged) which was my senior year of college. Both are misdemeanors.
Any chance at all of being able to teach in S. Korea?
Thanks in advance. |

I'm no expert, but I'm fairly sure that if you're an American you can get a CRC done in a state other than the one you got your DUI in, and get in that way. I believe you're SOL if you're from any other country. |

If ANYTHING other than "no record" shows on your CRC your visa will be denied by immigration without appeal or regard to circumstances.

Ignore the previous post. I have several friends who have a DUI on there record and are teaching here. Don't worry about it. As long as it isn't a drug or sex offense then don't worry. |

hmm.... not at a PS, not at a uni, maybe at a hakwon, but then I know of hakwons who regularly hire undocumented teachers....
The GEPIK and EPIK (NIIED) information packs (and the immigration policy book) have specific notes about this:
6. Criminal Record Certificate
Please note that possession of any criminal record will immediately disqualify you from gaining employment in GEPIK.
Perhaps they "fudged" their documentation or obtained it from somewhere that their DUI didn't show (like another state?)
OP: Go ahead and try but don't be surprised if the answer is a quick NO.

Actually the people I know that have a DUI on their record are PS teachers. Maybe it depends on the state where the offense happened. I know in some states a DUI is a felony where as other states it is just a misdemeanor. I would check. I have a misdemeanor on my record but when I got an FBI check it didn't show up. I guess I would double check with your state about the offense. Best of luck. |

I think the problem is that too many of the people involved in actually involved in the hiring process do not understand the term "criminal record."

how would I do this, wouldnt it look odd that my CRC is from a diff state than where I'm from, or do they not necessarily know this because of my passport? Also would a different state even have any sort of record on me at all to give me a CRC?

mine is a misdemeanor, I know that for sure. hmmm so it may not show on a FBI background check? Maybe I could try that. I fully understand why they need a CRC but come on, we all make mistakes and some of these arent even detrimental imo to being able to teach.

short version of the story. Something happened outside a friends apartment(i had no idea at the time what ). Either way someone said they saw someone else go into the apartment i was inside. Cops got to my friends place, knocked on the door(which my friends didnt open for whatever reason), they just opened it without a warrant or anything else. Came in guns drawn, made everyone get on the ground(basically threw us). I was drunk semi passed out in a friends closet in a room and they opened the door, grabbed me and threw me to the ground. I did not resist but proceeded to berate them and call them every name imaginable, pretty much everything anyones ever wanted to say to a cop. I was yelling really loud and being extremely obnoxious. And I was taken to jail for obstruction of justice...
Thanks again for all the help everyone. Maybe I'll just have to try to work in China, Taiwan, or somewhere else :/ |

Ah, refused to cooperate with police who entered the residence with probable cause. Most places I've lived call that obstruction. Anyway, hope all does work out well for you. And maybe Korea's government will finally realize that some crimes aren't serious and that people shouldn't branded for life for misdemeanors. |
