|
|
Hey all,
I currently live in the US and have a Verizon account. I use a blackberry curve.
I'm going to be moving to Korea soon. I like this phone well enough and don't care to buy a new one. Any ideas if I can use it over there with a Korean phone plan? I figure I would just have to change out the simcard.
Any advice on this is appreciated! |

not gonna happen. Korea is a closed network. |

It's not a network issue, but a hardware issue. I don't expect to use my US plan in Korea, but would sign up for a local plan. Any love? |

You would have to get it approved by the KTC for the iphone it was around 400k.
In other words, possible but expensive. |

for all PRACTICAL intents and purposes it is NOT POSSIBLE.
The SYSTEM here is CLOSED.
EVEN if you had matching hardware you would not be allowed to get a Korean "plan" for it.
In Korea you can't even switch your phone from one network to the other much less import one from abroad. If you change networks you change phones (but at least now you can keep your number).
At best you may be able to use it as a globally roaming device but most functions would not work and it would be prohibitively expensive.
And another side note: MOST foreigners CANNOT easily get ANY "plan" here. A very LARGE percentage of foreigners simply use a "prepaid - pay as you go" phone.
Sell your toy. It will be old and outdated when you return home. It cannot be used over here.

Thanks, ttompatz. That's good info. Glad I'm not married to the thing -- it would just be nice if it were possible to use, but so it goes.
A pre-paid deal sounds great, too -- I am not looking forward to paying the fees here for getting out of my contract. Wouldn't want to repeat that scenario in Korea. |

If you have an ARC, you can get a monthly plan in Korea.
Although Blackberry really hasn't caught on here, the iPhone is VERY popular. It seems like everyone and his granny has one now. Koreans are also very big on video calls.
You can get a blackberry here, but only the very new, very high end models. And even then, it's hard to find a place that sells them. They are mainly catering to the corporate types. |
