The wheels of justice turn exceedingly slowly, but they do turn.

Pentagon changes rules for discharging gays

WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Robert Gates Thursday approved new rules that will make it harder to discharge gays from the military, calling the changes a matter of "common sense and common decency."

Hallelujah! It's about time we saw movement on the civil rights issue of our time. Half step by baby step, the Obama Administration is moving things in the right direction.

At last.

I feel like the military is pretty much ready to move on from this ridiculous policy; sure there are some people that still have a problem with homosexuals, but that's true in a cross-section of the American population in general. It feels like it's angry cranks in the Senate that are the real obstruction to progress, not the military itself.

A gay man's gun bullet is just as deadly as a straight man's bullet.

Yet another sad day.

I support equal rights, however, and thus feel that heterosexuals as well should be disqualified from military service.

It's gratifying when we take a step toward the ideal of equality Jefferson expressed so well.

It's also gratifying to see Obama's strategy of moving repeal through Congress rather than let it happen via the courts. It was the correct strategy. Good call, Mr. President.

Prediction: One of Obama's campaign promises in '12 will be repeal of DOMA.
