|
|
This is one of my favorite flicks, and for over 2 years I've been searching for the DVD (though it's about as bare-bones as they come) with no luck. And it's not available for rent on tape at every single video store I've had the pleasure of frequenting. What gives? All the other (crappy, bare-bones) Kubrick films are available. Even the boxed 'Kubrick Collection' DVD set, which has a shot of of Jack Nicholson's famous "here's Johnny" pic on the box, doesn't include The Shining, though it does in other markets.
What's the deal? Is The Shining really all that controversial? Methinks not.
PS - Thanks in advance to Joe (Thanks).

Considering that one can easily purchase Fulci and Argento DVDs here, I doubt it. |

I've wondered the exact same thing myself, as I am a big horror fan and a big Kubrick fan, but very few Koreans I've discussed this with seem to have even heard of THE SHINING. And almost no one has heard of CLOCKWORK ORANGE, which I wouldn't be surprised to find out is banned in Korea.
But THE EXORCIST, which is a helluva lot more graphic than THE SHINING, is openly marketted in Korea, so I can't imagine what critieria the authorities would have for keeping THE SHINING out.
A student of mine did tell me that the film club at his university sponsored a Kubrick film festival. He didn't specify if they showed CLOCKWORK ORANGE or THE SHINING, though. |

I have rented both Clockwork Orange and the Shining in Korea.
Both videos came from a rental shop in Busan.
It was one of the largest stores that I have come across in Korea with a decent selection of older films.
The newer, small, stores tend to be a brick and mortar version of OCN. |

I've seen it on Korean cable a number of times.
Or was that "The Shinning"? |

I've seen the Shining here before...if you're looking for VHS, I saw a few copies in Myeong-dong before...if you are in Seoul, you can go to where the Avatar store is, then go to where the buses are...there's a video store there that specializes in used videos...3 for 10,000 |

I am pretty sure I saw that movie on DVD. I think it was in a small store in Kangnam station. I will look again. |

Joe's lookin' but he aint' seein'.
He still looks.
Only dug up the laughable American tv remake of THE SHINING with the dude from WINGS.
I know it's not banned here. Could be distributor rights issues.
