do you mean korean style sit down places where waiters bring girls to your table? i've only been once, but i didn't really speak enough korean (ok ok, or enough good looks and charming personality) to get any phone numbers or anything..

so you haven't been to one before? you're not getting a lot of bites because a lot of us who have visited these kinds of clubs know it's a bit of a lost cause, even if we aren't pros. a lot of money for very little yield.

just save your money and go to some actual dance clubs in hongdae...

Interesting. Why do you think its a lost cause guys? I would think that girls who go there are willingly doing so. Instead of other situations where you just pick them up unexpectedly.

So these nightclubs, all you pay for is alcohol is that correct? there is no cover charge?

thanks

I've been to these kinds of bars a few times. I'm a fairly clean cut, good looking guy with better than average Korean skills, and I while I don't think it's a lost cause, don't expect too much. Girls will come to your table out of sheer curiosity and you may get lots of phone numbers (even to meet up later) but the odds of her leaving the premises with you are slim.

If you're a good looking Korean guy with a bit of coin, these places are a GOLD MINE. One night stand heaven. There's a reason a lot of these places are located in hotels.

As far as cover charge/alcohol goes, most places are total ripoffs. Expect to pay around 250,000 for a table with a very, very small bottle of booze (seriously, like a pint) and a "beer set" with a fruit tray, dried snacks, etc.) Ordering individual drinks is pretty much unheard of.

You can order another beer set (6 bottles?) for 30,000 or so, but that will DEFINITELY turn off the girls and the booking waiters. You're also expected to tip the bookers for their services. Slide 'em a 10,000 right off the bat to get things going, and another 10,000 every time they bring someone over.

In general, the music in these places is HORRIBLE. Very bad pop music (4 or 5 songs on a loop) played on a computer by an "action" DJ who will lip sync, probably put on some kind of dance performance and try to get the crowd moving. After a couple of songs, the dance floor with EMPTY as he plays a couple of slow songs. These are designed for people who vibe on the dance floor to go back to the table (self booking)...a few slow songs later the DJ will pick up the pace with the SAME f'n songs and this is where you can feel out where the girl stands. If she suggests staying at the table, you're good. If she says she's going to dance with her friends, let her go. If she asks you to dance with her, she's not sure. Chances are she'll introduce you to her friends on the floor to see if they approve. Then the slow songs will come back on and the whole process repeats itself.

It's a very, very, very bizzare scenario, but one that works well in a veritable "no cold approach" social scene such as Korea's. It's very analogous to a speed dating thing, only there's drinking and dancing involved, with overtones of sexual immediacy.

Whatever you do, don't go in a big group of foreign guys. You'll probably get turned down at the door (unless you're all dressed to the nines and ask for an expensive table/private room (anywhere from 500,000 to 5 million won). Girls will also totally freeze up when they are brought to your table and will do the whole cover the mouth/fan the face act. It's best to have two Korean guys per foreigner minimum.

It's fun to do just for the experience. I guess I go to one about once a year, and with the exception of the few times I've gone with some very, very well-to-do businessmen who stroll in with pockets full of cash and Viagra (these guys probably drop about $15,000 US each time), I haven't had that much fun.
