It is the ass-crack of dawn and I finally got into the replacement center where I am going to be processed into the system here.
No mishaps of any kind- no stingers aimed at the plane and no RPGs fired as the plane landed (though I heard a NATO plane wasn't so lucky yesterday).
I was greeted by a member of the US reconstruction team who took me to billeting for the night and I was woken up before sunrise to start processing (they say it is the safest time because no one tries to shoot mortars onto the base and the gunships could easily spot probing teams trying to find their way into the perimeter).
I will be living and working near the Afghan-ISAF compound near the center of Kabul (though "relatively" safe), coordinating with NATO logistical teams for the airdrop of supplies to units participating in the upcoming offensive and civilians fleeing the ensuing violence.
I was briefed that this is a 7-month mission and I will be going back to my MACOM in Korea by November- so yeah, I'll be back.

Take care everyone and see you when I get back!

James

I hear if you're strapped for a nice location to hang out at, there's plenty of well-stocked empty caves for you to take a nap in.

LOL!
The biggest problem is my new boss, Gen. McCrystal, has ordered the closing of most MWR facilities at Bagram to show solidarity with the troops down range. In addition to banning the sales of alcohol onbase- making Afghanistan a very "dry" place.

I was offered a sweet gig with the DOD in Afghanistan last year, but finally changed plans based on similar inhibitions. Watch those mortars!

I wish I could ask you to let me know how the trout fishing is, but that would be optimistic.

Good luck, and yes, be careful.

You mean like no more $20 Halliburgers?

First he banned booze in his Kabul headquarters. Now the notoriously austere commander of US and Nato forces has a new target in his war on terror: ice cream and fast food.

General Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of Special Forces in Iraq, who runs eight miles a day, eats one meal and sleeps for only four hours a night, has given orders to close the junk food concessions on Nato bases.

No longer will the fighter pilots at Bagram or Kandahar airfields be able to ring Pizza Hut to deliver. Once General McChrystal has his way, the Whoppers will be off the menu: Burger Kings at both locations are to close. Even the newly opened TGI Fridays on the boardwalk in Kandahar is to close its doors once its contract expires.

This is a war zone, not an amusement park, wrote Command Sergeant-Major Michael T. Hall in a military blog.

The boardwalk area also has an Oakley sunglasses shop, a Subway sandwich bar and a Delice de France. The Harley-Davidson concession offering tax-free motorbikes delivered to soldiers homes is also going.

The decision is likely to appal the rear echelon soldiers stationed on bases the size of small cities but it has been welcomed by some of the frontline forces stuck in sparse combat outposts without fresh food or running water.

From the moment [General] McChrystal and I arrived in Afghanistan last summer, we began looking for ways to do things more efficiently across the battlefield. This effort includes moving and reallocating resources to better accomplish our mission, Sergeant-Major Hall wrote.

Stick a fork in your a** , turn you over, you are done.

No longer a free man, just a cog in a machine. Get killing or planning for others to do so. Prostitution.

How's the paycheck cowboy? Call it as it is.

I say this plainly because I know there is no resurrection or reality as an outcome in your case. I say this for others.
