Yup I have asked about this before and failed to receive a direct reason as to why my internet is so slow, especially from users with the same ISP.
From Speedtest.net
http://www.speedtest.net/result/768373710.png
Now I was told by the technician who installed this that internet will be slow for all sites that are not from Korean domains, is this true?? He said testing it on speedtest.net will not register its 'real speed'...seriously?
So downloading from rapidshare and watching stuff on youtube will always be slow because they are not Korean exclusive. Am I being shafted here? |

Yes, it's true that things will be a bit slower from places outside Korea. However, it also depends on what you're paying. If you're paying 30,000-40,000 monthly for that service, then, yes, you're getting ripped. I'm getting about 10x better than what you're getting on both down and uploads with KT. We have a good plan, but it's not the best they offer.

Those are a couple. Sometimes they're slower and sometimes faster. Depends on time of day, etc. |

Over 70 views and only one reply?...wow thanks guys.
Denverdeath, an actual thanks for your reply.
Well I will look into changing from TCN Daegu to KT, is their service available nationwide? Wondering about this as I was told the reason I have to join with TCN is because "I don't have much choice here in Daegu". I'm still thinking that somewhere along the line I am being ripped off.
So again I would like to ask this: What are people paying for their cable and internet packages? and who are you with? Would be really helpful to know.. |

Speedtest isn't much good in Korea anymore since they removed their Korean server. I also notice a couple japanese servers are missing too.
The nature of the underseas cables and how you get to them can skew the results a lot.
http://speed.nia.or.kr/
is a Korean site. Run it in IE. you can test your speed there. Couple activex controls needed. Its pretty easy even if you don't know korean.
on the front page you can see average speeds to get an idea of what the various providers are running at.
On SK Broadband I'm getting 66/4.09 as an average with 15 ms ping times
To test:
click the moving circle that looks like a speed gauge:
인터넷 속도
it should have a bunch of stuff pre-selected on the next screen. Your location, provider, type of building you live in, etc
you might have to activate an activex control here
click the black button at the bottom
another activex control
and just watch the test
my second test was much better
85/4.4 16 ms ping |

1. Yes, testing with speedtest.net won't give your true speed. Use the site that other guy has suggested or run torrents to get your true speed.
2. KT is overpriced. Avoid it if you can. LG has a cheaper service and has generally faster internet. It can also provide internet TV if you want that too. |

I'm very happy with Sk Telecom 100mbit internet. 35k per month and super speeds. |

1 year contract with KT for their 100mb/s Gwan LAN is 38,000w per month.
Doesn't seem to much more than the other companies.
LG Xspeed does not allow foreigners to sign up. At least, not when I tried to last year. Maybe they changed their policy since then.
No matter what service you get, DO NOT GET THE INTERNET PHONE. They give you some POS wireless router that is horrible for torrents or anything else. |

Thanks for the link crossmr, ok I'm averaging just over 2mbps with the Korean speed test site after numerous attempts, torrents are pretty slow at 500kbs as well. So I will definitely be changing to a different IS/cable provider. Thanks for the suggestions and peace out.
btw destroyer...what the hell is up your avatar dude? |

I'm on SK Telecom, as I said earlier, 2mbps would be on the extremely slow side for me. I'd recommend SK. |

Dude,
FROST makes the best avatar pictures. I'ma change it to another pic of him pretty quick here. you'll see. This next one will be even better. edit: screw that. none of the other pics are teh right size.
as far as internets go: I quite xpeed 'cus they were giving me bad ping while gaming. You should look into either QOOK or HELLO D. They've got some really cheap package deals. |

my speed test says 100 mbit, but i rarely download at faster speeds than 2mbit. my computer is kinda new, and i'm plugged directly into the wall. any ideas? you do torrents? not sure if it's really 100 mbit, or what's up. |

I've got a very similar problem. I just got my internet hooked up last weekend. I'm in Nowon-gu A Korean teacher arranged everything for me as my Korean is still pretty poor and set me up with a cable and cable internet package from C&M, all of it is in my name. I immediately noticed that I was not getting the ridiculous speeds I expected in Korea, instead I was dl'ing torrents at around 300-500kbps and speedtests showed around a 3MB connection. Unfortunately the korean speed test site just crashes my IE repeatedly so I couldn't test on that but all other servers were absurdly slow.
I'm not sure exactly what I'm paying but I believe its probably around 35,000 a month for cable + internet. This seems like a ripoff to me, should I talk to the teacher that helped me set it up and see if anything can be done, or does anybody know of any alternatives in the area? I'm a little annoyed at the moment. |

I have C&M also, and it's basically crap. Bandwidth fluctuates wildly, with no rhyme or reason. I've been without service entirely for no reason whatsoever. But it's cheap. Yay. |
