|
|
I came here as a part of a couple but about 5 months into our contracts, we've decided to go our different ways while attempting to maintain cordiality at work. How would it be viewed by our school if we broke the news of our split to them? Would we face repercussions of any sort? Neither of us want to leave Korea because we know the harm it would do to the school, but we're worried that a break up might cause tension and side-taking (or fear of). It's pretty small with 3 foreign and 6 Korean teachers. For the time being, we only plan on telling the only other foreign teacher at our school, and no one else. But I intend to move out and pay for an apartment of my own (see recent thread by me), so I don't know how long we can hide it, you know?
Should we tell them or not? |

Ordinarally (ordinarilly? sp?) I'd say your personal life is none of their business, but since you're on a couple contract... well... I'm still not sure if they have a right to know provided it doesn't affect your work performance. |

'couple contract'? look if you are gonna pay for an apartment yourself (and not demand the school now pay for two separate apartments), i don't see how they can complain. and what's there to hide? but yeah, i'd say...don't bother telling them. if they want to find out, fine. it doesn't affect their bottom line, so unless they later want to use that as a BS excuse to fire you to avoid paying severance or something....i'd say that's the only thing to worry about |

Keep on working and don't say anything. They have this thing in Korea called "noonchi" and if they suspect the two of you have broken up, they will probably just let it slide ala; don't ask don't tell. |

I don't think that word means what you think it means.
OP, don't ask, don't tell. Nobody's business but yours, etc. |

Just curious, why would you pay for an apartment on your own? If she wants you to move out, she can pay for half of it. You're indirectly paying for her free apartment with your labour. |

If it were that easy, you wouldn't have divorce courts. |

I know, but it's not a divorce, it's a break up. She can't take him to court for the apartment, so why would he just give it to her?
Both the OP and the gf both signed the same contract, they are both equally entitled to the apartment. If she wants him out, then she should PAY half his rent or move out herself. Does the fact that she has a vagina somehow give her divine right to whatever she wants? |

He may have really wanted a different place, or they may have indeed come to some kind of agreement about her paying him some $$ every month. Hell, it's possible that she wanted to stay in the same place together to save money, but he thinks it'd be too awkward.
In the end the why almost doesn't matter, it's his deal.
Even if he feels somehow obliged to take the brunt of the financial burden, there could be a ton of reasons, far from a belief that her gender alone somehow warrants it. |

No gender is certainly not an issue. She is paying some, although that is neither here nor there.
We don't have single contract, but two separate ones. Actually they each stipulate that the contracted teacher is entitled to a single non-shared apartment. They like us at the school, and if we wanted we might be able to threaten to go home if they don't give us what the contract technically stipulates. But morally, I feel the onus is on us to pay for the separate apartment since we came on good faith that they would only need to provide on apartment.
Although I will say that they do pay more for our co-worker's single apt. than they do for our 2-bedroom.
But on a separate note, any idea on how to go about finding some housing between now and November. |

Totally depeends on what you're looking for.
Call the 'nearsubway.com' people and they'll help you out a ton, especially Gilbert, but don't put your faith in the site alone. There are a lot of 'show' apartments that don't actually exist. |

Why not ask your boss if they will pay for the second apartment? They already saved 5 months of rent. They can only say no. |
