Is that story true, UrbanMyth? Awesome if it is. Laughing

Scout's Honor! Every word. Actually there was a bit more back and forth...but he eventually agreed to pay in full as long as I didn't tell the Korean teachers (who'd already agreed to a pay cut beforehand)

And all the time he was telling me this he was standing there with my pay in the envelope in his pocket. Evil or Very Mad

And that's a mild story compared to some of the ones I have.

Someday when I have time I will write down the story of my first contract.

Should be VERY instructive for newbies and parts of it will be VERY familiar to old-timers.

^ Please do write that story UrbanMyth, a lot of us will enjoy reading it

Good job having a back bone and standing up for yourself. If more teachers did that we wouldn't have as many problems as there are now.

Hello all,

Please check out the job posting below. It's for a very good job in the Yongin/Gwangju area available immediately.

We are looking for a native (male or a female) English teacher at our school in Gwangju/Yongin. We are requesting that the teacher is currently in Korea. It's an established hagwon (opened in 2003) with a good reputation and working environment. The working hours are from
9:00 AM-6:00 PM M-F (but only 5 hours of teaching per day) teaching kindergarten and elementary school. The monthly salary is from 2.3-2.4 million won with housing, pension, health insurance (50%), completion bonus and daily lunch provided. We are looking to hire immediately. Please forward resumes and photos, and I will be in touch ASAP.

I think my main concern is that if I ask for a letter of release my boss is going to demand that I pay back my original plane flight and the recruitment fee, which would be about 1 mil won or more.

Basically at this point I just want to leave Korea. If I talk to the Labor Board would they be helpful at getting me off of my contract without having to pay these fees, or is my only option in getting released "officially" to pay all these fees?

I feel like a midnight run would be the most economical route but I may be mistaken.

What did you eventually decide to do?

I haven't been here long and I'm already hating it how many of the "soap operas" here don't seem to have a concluding episode (or at least not one that's shown on freeview). Mad

I always considered Full House less a soap opera than a tragedy.....

a full blown tragedy of the human spirit... and when Bob Sagett asked both Olsen twins over to his house to study his acting style.....a modern day retelling of the Jocasta story... Crying or Very sad

Jocasta, the wife and mother of Oedipus, not the comic book girl robot

errr ... the Full House version I was referring to was the one with Rain and Song Hye Gyo .. the OP was talking about Korean soap operas.

End of the story:

I left Korea in early March, never heard from my school again. My co-worker stayed and is almost finished with his contract and is very happy to leave, he says not a whole lot has changed. They hired a new teacher in my place within 2 weeks.

I worked a minimum wage job for a while now am going back to graduate school. I'm dating a girl I really like. I'm much happier and more content then I have been in ages. All is well that ends well... and doesn't involve Korea.

The End

I had a friend who was in a similar situation as you and all of her coworkers got screwed out of pensions and/or flights home because of the director's inept accounting.

If a teacher gets screwed out of the flight home, couldn't the teacher take all of their money out of their bank account (putting it into $1000 travelers cheques to make it slimmer) go to immigration and say they need to leave Korea, but have no money and got screwed out of the flight home? Wouldn't immigration come down on the hagwon owner hard over that?
