Nowadays Hollywood movies seem to be all special effects and style, but no decent scriptwriting and even lackluster acting. Why pay big bucks to go and see these films or even rent the new releases when you can rent an older film for almost nothing?
With this thread, I'd like to make a list of the best older films that people must see.
A few off the top of my head are:
GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS
CADDYSHACK
PRIMAL FEAR (Ed Norton's first film)
PLATOON
SCARFACE (both the original and the Al Pacino versions)
AMERICAN BEAUTY
SEVEN SAMURAI (The Magnificent Seven was based on this Japanese classic)
TRUE ROMANCE (a star studded mobster flick)
THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES
SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (one of Brad Pitt's best films)
SIN NOMBRE (Mexican gangs and Mexicans trying to flee Mexico. Very hard core film) |

I'd say only two in your list are actually old movies!! The original Scarface and Seven Samurai.....
But, yeah. I was talking about this with a class of high-schoolers the other day. We're doing a film course next month so I asked them for suggestions of what they'd like to study.......you can guess their replies.....Matrix, Transformers, Titanic.....
I think my speech about how the older movies have much more satisfying storylines and acting performances fell on mostly deaf ears..... |

I'll go real old school and say Marx Brothers. I've been using them for the past month in my elementary school as a supplement to the text book.
Big Store - piano duet was for feelings, asked how many feelings they saw on Harpo's face
A night in Casablanca- used recently for "It's on the Table", used the clip when they are tricking the German by moving his clothing.
Kids love them. Whenever I show that I have the DVDs with me (bought them in Yongsan so they have Korean subtitles), the kids quickly change to their best behavior. Then after class if they had behaved, I will let them finish the clips. |

I agree with you on your first point, but when I offered to show American Beauty to some students in their 20's, they said, "Oh, that's an old movie, isn't it?" It's from 1999 actually.
Then I though, "Wow, what's old depends on your perspective." For a 20 year old, 10 years ago is half a lifetime. So now I use price to decide whether a movie is old or not. If I can buy a new copy (not a pirate one) for less than $10, then it must be old.
A couple of nights ago, I watched what you can call a real popcorn movie called CANNONBALL RUN. Let's call it very light entertainment, but I still loved it because it had a cast of at least a dozen well known actors. Many of the jokes had some edge because they were racial, religious or about different cultural groups, but none were malicious I would say. Today American society is too uptight to make this kind of movie. Everything has to be politically correct. You can't joke about anything.
It's this kind of movie your high schoolers might like because it has lots of cars racing around (and a very young Jackie Chan). Tell them that it's a cool film because it doesn't look like a video game. It looks real. |

speaking of classics, Freaks holds up incredibly well for a movie released in the early 30s. |

If the DVD is available as a torrent, it's old. |
