I would try shortening your stride a little bit. If you have longer legs and extend your legs fully then your knees and hips are absorbing most of the impact. If you make sure you feet are landing directly under your body then the impact will be distributed more evenly. It may take a while to do this, but it actually helps. Also, make sure you're landing on the ball of your foot and pushing off with your toes. If you're landing on your heels then the landing is too rigid and will be murder on your joints. |
I've read about this before, but I'm not sure if I can get it right without and instructor teaching me. I think I'll just try to watch some youtube videos to get it right. Youtube is the second best thing when you don't have a teacher |
It does take practice. The good thing is that the two go pretty much hand-in-hand. When you shorten your stride you'll most likely eliminate landing on your heels. |

Yep. I ran/jogged from the time I was 20 up until my early 40's...At age 43, I developed severe pain in my right knee. During an MRI, they found a torn medial meniscus and during arthroscopic surgery, the doc also found damage to my ACL and arthritis on my lower knee. I was told that all the damage was probably due to my running, which was both on concrete and grass. Needless to say, my running days are over but I do still powerwalk on softer surfaces. |

I haven't done ab exercises for over 3 months.
Cardio is where it's at if you need to get toned. As some people have pointed out, pretty much everyone has a "six-pack" somewhere (and not just in the fridge).
Did the OP lose their love handles? |

My current abs workout, twice weekly
2 sets weighted crunches
2 sets bicycle crunch with 10 kg plate behind head
2 sets 10 kg plated russian twists
2 sets side (oblique) planks for about 30 secs
2 sets planks (around a min - min and 1/2)
2 sets reverse crunches
2 sets donkey kicks
2 sets flags on bench
all till failiure.
But yeah without the cardio even that won't give you a visible six pack sadly....
Plus I drink daily and smoke and like my cheeses in the evening so.... whatcanyoudo? |

You know..... UknowsI, there are plenty of hills around Korea. My suggestion is some ankle weights and a few gallons of water in a decent backpack for some good cardio with low impact. I would not give up running all together, but climb the nearest hill to your apartment two or three times a week and go for a nice, long, run once a week and your body will probabaly thank you for it. |

I've been following a pretty loose low-carb eating style for about 3 weeks now and have already lost 2kg's.
If you're not in a mad rush to lose weight then you don't need to do a hard-core Atkins diet of strictly no carbs. I eat bits and pieces of stuff high in carbs and have still lost weight.
I occasionally have some chips, root veg, fruit, cookies, chocolate.......stuff that's not allowed on Atkins.....
.........but I haven't eaten bread, rice, noodles or pasta.....I'm still eating a little bit of potato now and then......I'm Irish. I have to eat potatoes. It's the law.
Anyway, point is, in my own personal experience, the low-carb thing seems to work well. |

I simply ate less and exercise more. Sleep is the key in my opinion and proper hydration. What you eat isn't that important, but keep in mind healthier foods will feel you up more and won't give you that I am going to die Mcdonalds feeling. I have lived off of rice, spices, small amounts of meat, and lots of kimchi and I am doing great in terms of weight loss. I still eat pizza if I want to, drink beer if I feel like it. I haven't flet deprived at all and close to losing 100lbs in one year. Walking, portion control, regular exercise, hydration; just my opinion. |

I live in a city which is called something like "the big field", so it's quite far to the closest mountain. I'm not giving up running though. Just running with an incline on the thread mill and such instead. But I really like running along the river, and that's why my joints often hurt and I should improve my running technique. |

Does anyone know of weight loss clinics in the Kimhae or Busan area? The fitness centers here are expensive so for now I'm just jogging.
Thanks for the helpful replies |

I've lost 8 kilos in the last few months and intend on losing about 4-6 more.
Basically I lift hard and heavy and then do 30 minutes of cardio directly afterwards (incline at highest setting, brisk walking speed).
Some days I double up and go to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (minus cardio), or split lifting and BJJ to separate days.
The diet is where it's at, though. I cut out sodas and fruit juices. I basically eat the same few meals over and over, with some cheat meals here and there. I usually have a cheat day where I eat whatever I want. Normal mix:
Sweet potatoes
Chicken salad
Chicken sandwich
Almonds
Eggs |

You guys are spreading misinformation, low carb diets only work short term and do damage on your muscles, you'll be a saggy-skinned weirdo on that diet.
More exercise, less calories, that's all there is to it. Especially in the cardio area. 8 minute abs DOES work as well, but you still need to lose overall body fat for them to show through.
If you really wanna get hardcore, the only diet with real scientific studies to back it are "The Zone" as it's targeted toward those looking to increase athletic performance and have less body fat and more muscles on a long term basis.
I've lost 12 kilos in 3 months and gotten ripped in the process. |

Well, I'm not reading through 8 pages to see if this has been said or not, but I'll tell you the only two ways to get rid of your love handles.
1.) Cardio and healthy diet - You can't "target" fat loss. Which means you can't do one exercise that's aimed at losing fat just from you flanks or any other part of your body. The only way fat there get's burned is when it starts losing it all over the body. You have no way of controlling if the fat comes off your gut, your love handles, your back, your chin, or anywhere else. Some people are lucky and the first place fat comes off is their mid section. For most men however, this is the first place we store fat and the last place it comes off. That means you have to do intense cardio 3 or 4 days a week. Eat lots of veg, cut back on the white carbs, and more importantly, don't stop. It takes time to lose body fat. It's not going to happen in a week or two with an isolated exercise. Fat burns over the whole body, not in one spot.
2.) Liposuction - sad, but true. As I said before, for most men, it's the first place we put fat on and the last place it comes off. It's just how we're built (for women it's the hips, butt, and thighs.) Having that said, I know some guys that have been working out and eating right for years, have great bodies, except their flanks. Even really lean guys will still have handles. That's just where our fat goes. The only other way to get right of it is to get it sucked out. You may think that's not the option for you. That's okay. Your body, your choice. I will tell you this though, behind rhinoplasty (nose job) have the love handles liposuctioned is the most common form of cosmetic surgery men go through. For the simple fact it's the most difficult area to perfect and may nearly be impossible.
The good news is, you live in a place where this is performed quite often and at a very reasonable rate compared to the West.
Good luck! |

Can you prove that it is misinformation? How does it damage your muscles? I assume the opposite to be the case.

The type of calories you consume is far more important than the amount. Obviously you will get fat if you eat too much, but you will definitely get fat eating the FDA approved food pyramid diet.

Isn't the Zone a low carb diet?
Just looked it up. 40% of carbs in your diet is lower than what the govt recommends. Certainly carb restricted, at least. It wouldn't surprise me if you got even greater gains from cutting the carbs to 20% We seriously aren't meant to consume mass loads of sugar (which is what carbs are.) We simply didn't have access to those foods for fully 1 million years of our evolution. |

We didn't really eat meat until we developped the tools that let us hunt and carve animals. Are we meant to eat a diet of small fruits? |
