My wedding date is set for next month, but I only recently found out that the 'legal' marriage doesn't happen right after the ceremony, as I thought it would. As far as I know, I have to apply at a government office and get a certificate of no impediment to the marriage.

Could anyone enlighten me as to what the process entails? If there is any specific info for South Africans, I'd really appreciate it. It looks like it will take at least 6 weeks to get that certificate from my good for nothing Dept of Home Affairs.

Check your embassy. I have a South African buddy who I seem to recall had a few hurdles to jump through before his marriage was good and legal in both countries.

Contact YOUR embassy.

The process is usually pretty painless but does take a while.

If you are divorced then it is a little longer (because you need to prove the divorce with your final decree from the court who granted it).
