|
|
My trainer keeps saying "June - Pro Test" to me but I have no idea what he's talking about and have been unable to get an understanding of it from other people in my gym who translate. Does anyone on here have any information about it?
I'd like to enter some sort of competition for boxing while I'm here. Let me know. |

It's a test to get your licence as a professional boxer. Probably not that necessary, but a good test of your skills. I'm not sure what the rules/laws are about getting a Korean boxing licence as a foreigner though. |

My coach sometimes says the same thing and points at a date on the calendar. They have a test for obtaining a pro boxing license maybe 4 or 5 times a year (to my knowledge) and from what my coach told me, it's basically just a two round sparring session. Although, I imagine it's more like a 2 round fight. I haven't taken it yet, so I can't say for sure what's involved. |

Interesting. Looking for some sort of way to do some competition here, doesn't sound like I was hoping for ideally, but it might have to do. Hopefully more information is available somewhere. |

I work out in Sunae on the Bundang line. It's a bit far from Itaewon, but if you look around, I'm sure there are some boxing gyms close by. When I lived in Sillim about 3 years ago, I worked out at a gym right near the subway station there. The coach there was a really cool guy too. |

Hey, ccikulin, where exactly is your gym? I'm right by Yatap so the travel is really close to me.
Also, what are membership prices like and what time does it open and close? |

My gym is right outside Sunae Station. If you take the subway to sunae and go out exit 4 ( I think it's exit 4, anyway, it's the opposite end of the subway station from exit 3) Then just go straight and cross a little street. There's a Quizno's on the left, just keep going straight and it's at the end of the block on the right. It's tough to see because it's on the 5th floor, but if you look up you'll see a sign that says 김광선 복싱. Im not sure exactly when they open in the morning, but they stay open until around 9:00pm and they're open on Saturday early until about 7:00pm and closed on Sundays. The membership fees are a little high though. When you sign up you have to pay 150,000 for the first month and then it's 100,000/month after that. The gym is about what you get at most gyms in Korea. It's not very big, but they have a small ring and 4 heavy bags. (No speed or double-end bags, but you never see those in Korea). One good thing though is that the coach at this gym is pretty good. He'll work the mitts with you and he'll try to help you out with anything you want to work on.
If you're interested in joining, Im always there every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and usually Saturday. I can meet you by the station and take you there. During the week I usually go around 5:00. |

ccikulin, thanks that would be great, the only thing is I get off work at 7:20 Mon, Wed, Fri, so it might be better on a Saturday.
Hey is your Boxlife? I was on this website that listed all the boxing gyms in Seoul and most of them had a website. It looks like a pretty cool gym.
Do they have any discounted price if you pay for 3 months in advance? |

Does your coach teach you guys rabbit punching (where the fist doesn't twist at the end)? When I boxed here mine did. He didn't seem to know that it's illegal internationally. |

Yeah, a lot of coaches in Korea have these kids hopping back and forth and throwing arm punches and never putting their hip into it or turning their punches over. It's actually a little baffling to me. I don't see any advantage to punching that way and any Korean I've sparred with that could fight, didn't fight that way any more. I think it's one of those things where they just learn this one way of doing it and wont accept any other way.
My coach is alright though. I've seen him teaching people that way, but he never messes with me. I bend my knees and sit down on my shots and he works with me on what I try to do. |

Burgerdance, sorry about the late reply. Didn't see your message. I usually go to the gym around 12:30 or 1:00 on Saturdays. If you're interested, send me a message back and I can meet you by the subway station. I'll be going tomorrow around 12:30 I think.
I don't know about my gym having a website. I've never seen one anyway. And, I've never heard about any type of discount for paying three months in advance. Although, now that you mention it, I should ask. If they do have one, I'm gonna feel like a real moron for paying by the month for all this time. |

I'm moving to Seoul in the Summer and I always wanted to try boxing, my dad did it when he was younger and loved it. Do any of you know any gyms that would welcome a complete beginner? I will be living in Southern Seoul (Jamsil) area, but willing to travel. |
