Hey all,

My friends and I are planning to go camping somewhere for Buddah's birthday in a few weeks. Looking at heading south to TongYeong.

Anyone know what the situation is for camping? Is it just a case of pitching anywhere? Or will it have to be in designated areas?

Also, any recommendations for TongYeong or surrounding islands? Bijindo Island looks pretty darn good.

Except for National Parks, some Provincial Parks and forest lands where preservation is a factor, camping is generally allowed in Korea. If you're on private land or aren't sure, ask. Camping is a very popular pastime here, and as long as you're respectful and responsible, it shouldn't be a problem. I've camped all over the peninsula with no problem.

I live in the seoul area, do you know specifically which parks will allow camping>? Also, we don't have camping supplies.. I heard there are some campsites that actually provide tents and grills etc.. Do you know anything about this? Thanks for any info!

Exactly my perception and experience.

In fact, the only hassle you may get is someone wanting you to pay a camping fee (upwards of 5000 won if you pitch at a major touristy beach).

I did have one angry guy come up and yap something in Korean but I shrugged and said "I don't know" ("moe-lie-yo") and he buggered off. I think I was on his land.

Most Koreans appreciate foreigners playing tourist in their country. I meet a lot of eager amateur tour guides when I go camping and think coastal Korea is a gold mine of camping for travellers who wanna get off the beaten path. Korean beaches may not be exceptional but about a hundred of them are pretty darn good.
