How would you do this without simply showing a movie? My oc-teacher asked me to do this.

It seems to me that Hollywood definitely gave Asia many ideas such as to build robots, 3G phones, great laptops, and other things that were only science fiction just 20 to 30 years ago. Some of it was science fiction still yet 10 years ago such as with these phones and newer computer technical specs.

I would also guess young kids take such marvels of technology like PC's and great movies like Avatar for granted not seeing how unprecidented and impressive such things really are since this is all they ever knew in their short time here sofar.

The robots and technology of the past 20-30 years was inspired by Hollywood?

Hollywood inspired the Asian economic policy of manufacturing and (in some cases) developing said technology quite cheaply?

I'd more suggest to you that you try to teach your kiddies that Hollywood promotes an ahistorical view of the world.

Nah I'm being facetious, there probably could be a grain of truth in what you said.

You can teach them that Hollywood movies are really propaganda for American imperialism. They aren't just entertainment. They have a purpose.

Is this a topic at public school which you are teaching in Korean? Because frankly unless they�re mega advanced for their age they will have horrendous trouble grasping any of the concepts mentioned above

I�d string it right back and focus on �Entertainment� as the umbrella. Then over time you can cover the influences of American music, movies, games and fashion separately�perhaps also chronologically (60�s to today etc). Don't forget what age they are!

I agree Von Ludwig, it's not in Korean and documentary or advance speaking just goes over elementary students heads. For this reason, there are many things left unsaid so we keep it in an entertaining focus.

Taking an entertainment approach is more doable and they still learn many things not directly taught. I don't guess things about sinking ships are all that popular right now, but Titanic is an epic historical re-enactment. I could show pictures and short video of C3PO and R2D2 and then begin miming what I imagine a robot teacher in the year 2015 could be like.

Science fiction was highly influential to me growing up, but mainstream was comedy and drama. Many intellectual insightful ideas also went into mainstream such as robots, cyborgs, space travel, tiny computers, awesome video screens, cell phones, and other things which are becoming increasingly mainstream as everyday things. And the science fiction becomes reality as we get older.

I would say Hollywood both dramatizes what the world is and what it could be. It inspires us to think as individuals and be individuals. When we go watch a movie in a theater, it's MY movie; not OUR movie. Each person has a unique personal experience with the movies though it may be heard mentality when all the rage is on to get in on a new movie on opening weekend. I bet they like Wall-E, because it take the robot idea to a new personal level of being a free thinking individual with feelings.

I already found out they are familiar with most popular movies, but it required the Korean teacher to say, 'Terminator," for them to understand what I was talking about since these names are transliterated and pronounced using Korean speaking phonetics. It has to sound just right or they don't know what you are saying even though they do actually know.

OP...your school is awful, and I hope you are keeping your promise to the students.

Anything "deep" is going to go right over these kids' heads. Why on earth is your co-teacher asking for this? Just let them stick with "He is Zeeto. Zeeto is my friend."
