Just a warning to people to say that I accidentally got involved in a religious organisation here. A few weeks back, in Seoul on the subway, and oldish (50+) Austrian man spoke to me, tell ng me he was an Ambassodor of Peace. Curious as to what that actually was, he told me that his organisation is invloved with peaceful and socio-economic/cultural activites for South Korea's impovereished, and also in dealing with North Korean issues. He seemed like a friendly enough man, and invited me another time to have coffee and chat about such things - certainly seemed more interesting than the lame teaching I usually do. Met him a few days later - and with all these other older European men as 'Ambassadors' too, I sat down to a short talk about Korea's (social, etc) problems, and then I was taken into a large office to watch two movies about their hero - Mun Seon Myeong. I realsied while watching the first that this was the 'Moonies' man - the infamous Korean cult guy who thinks he's the son of God (or something to that effect). The Austrian man told me that Reverend Mun (Moon also) is a strongly spiritual, so much so that he can forsee the furture and can find people's perfect match - he could even find my future wife, I was told - as he had found the Austrian man's (which would be VERY interesting for me to find out my ideal wife, since I swing the other way...). The talk had gone from genuine peace and social problems to religious talk and the absolute authority of Mr. Mun. I was asked to buy and over-highlighted book on the Divine Principles (?), but I declined. They have programmes to become a full member, every Saturday - but fortunately I had to go to work, and said I'd think about it more. They've me two times since...hhhmmm...ignoring the calls...Just be careful of these folks - the organisation I found out via the Net is : The Interreligious and International Peace Council, and one of their aims is to reform the UN along religious lines. It proports to be Interreligious, but I only heard of pro-Mun, evangelical Christian-type stuff...Be wary! |

Be wary, yes. Evangelical Christian-type...no...Moon is God incarnate. Jesus was a false prophet, he's the real deal....or so I was told while attending their language school. Luckily, they knew my stance on Faith, so left me alone, but sure made for interesting class discussions.....
You ought to look on the net, the loons have major $$$$$ and own several influential businesses/corporations....or so I've read, not sure of the validity.
Shoosh!

Not sure if it's same group, but last year I met a couple of beautiful young Korean lasses in a subway station who spoke great English and invited me to a big sporting event (a soccer game, i believe is what they said). I should've been more suspicious from the outset (pretty girls approaching me?), but as it was, I couldn't attend anyway. A friend of mine went, though, and it turned out to be some big religious/cult rally in honor of some dubious character. My friend said she tried to leave and they gave her a helluva time getting out. |

Alright Noel.. Not sure if it's the same guy but was he called Chris (Christian) by any chance? I played footie with a guy a few weeks back.. nice bloke initially, then went a bit happy clappery. He had a girl with him.. can't remember her name but was South American.
Just wondering |

Yeah, the Moonies own Seongnam Chunma, the current K-League champions.
They've won the league the last three years straight, and yet have no fans, because people are too scared of the nutters to go!
There's also another religious soccer club, Hallelujah, in the K2-League. They are based in Gimpo.
Stay away from Gyeonggi-do, I tells ya! |

I was in Busan last December and I got pulled up by 3 really pretty girls near Haeundae and they asked me to come to a picnic and dinner night for peace. I thought at first this will be alright and they were good at their job, a little flirty to make you interested.
Anyway, I said maybe and they gave me the pamphlet. It had all the nations of the worlds children holding hands and all this crap in it and then down the bottom in tiny print and said it was for the moonies.
I was with a newbie girl at the time(here 2 weeks) and she was adament on going. I tried to tell her what it was but she wouldn't listen and went. By the end of that dinner she couldn't get out quicker. |

Actually a few of you mentioned the soccer game link - the guy (whose name was christian, yes!) said to me as I was leaving that they were having one the other Saturday (seemed to be every Saturday). So it seems we have all met the same people - and those videos did get pretty heavy-handed with the religious thing and Reverend Mun being all amazing and all...A follow up question: Why are Protestant religions here seemingly so conservative (getting up early, etc) - why are they like this in Korea...not like this in my home country (NZ)... |

That's a very good question. The church that I've been attending *sporatically* I think were alluding to~ if you don't come regularily, then you're condemned. Hold the weddin'!! I say.
Well, show me a cool, vulgar, mellow, beer drinkin', cigar smokin' church in the hood and I'm there!

I met an American doctor (physician) who is an "ambassador" also. He said he is here doing volunteer work. Thanks for the heads-up. |

I was approached by a woman on the train, and was given a cassette tape with some picture of a bloke on the front. The look in her eyes was kinda wild, i wonder if it was moonie related... |

Not that it's anything more than academic interest, but I understand the Moonies somewhat differently from Ryst Helmut.
I once attended a Moonie workshop, just to satisfy my curiosity. We were told that God tried three times to send the world a prophet with a perfect family.
The first attempt was when God created Adam. This attempt failed because Eve fell prey to the temptation of the serpent.
The second attempt was when God sent Jesus into the world. This attempt failed because Joseph was never convinced that Mary didn't cheat on him. (The Gospel of Matthew says he was finally convinced, but I'm sure that Reverend Moon knows better.) Without Joseph's help, Jesus could not preach the wonderful message which he was sent to preach, and instead was reduced to speaking in simple parables.
The third attempt was when God sent you-know-who into the world. God never fails on the third attempt.
The Moonies have gotten such amazing conversion rates from their workshops that they were accused of exercising some sort of nefarious mind control. The police have sent spies into their workshop to verify such suspicions, but the spies were able to find nothing. I too saw my attendees signing up in droves, and I can't explain it either.
"Arirang" is in the Moonie songbook:
Quote: |
The lover who has left me and gone away
Will not go 4 kilometers before his/her feet will hurt. |
It is interesting that Reverend Moon purports to fulfill Christ's mission, yet the Moonies sing a song which preaches vengeance. |
