Radley Balko has posted video of the SWAT raid on a Missouri home that he wrote about last February. This is the one where the Columbia Police Department busted in, fired seven shots at the family's dogs, and ended up recovering a small amount of marijuana:

Watch the video.

Just watched the video.

Radley Balko wrote:
Its heartening that nearly a million people have now seen the Columbia video. But it needs some context. The officers in that video arent rogue cops. Theyre no different than other SWAT teams across the country. The raid itself is no different from the tens of thousands of drug raids carried out each year in the U.S. If the video is going to effect any change, the Internet anger directed at the Columbia Police Department needs to be redirected to Americas drug policy in general. Calling for the heads of the Columbia SWAT team isnt going to stop these raids. Calling for the heads of the politicians who defend these tactics and promote a war on drugs thats become all too literalthat just might.

The video shows so many victims on so many levels. A six year old kid had to be put through this whole ordeal while watching his dog get shot. Cops seriously need to get a grip. The man had no weapons, a little bit of resin and a pipe. The man was eventually fined only 300 Dollars for "drug paraphernalia" since small amounts of Cannabis are legal in Missouri. For as cruel as this episode was to the family, the dog, indeed the entire neighborhood, financially, it makes no sense. A $300 fine for a SWAT team that normally costs in the thousands of Dollars to assemble.

End prohibition. End "the War on Drugs."

That's fairly typical of the US, where petty users are with regularity divvied more time than murderers. Two titles I always recommend are 'Drug Warriors and Their Prey' (which details hundreds of 'drug busts' comparable to this one, and some worse by far) and 'The Chemical Muse'.

Dudes probably think they just 'saved the world' of drugs and tyranny.

It could have easily been my home or any of my friends.

I would hate to think that this is normal of police action, but if it is, it's not a place that I would want to live in.
