Recent incidents show the culture of sports has taken a terrible turn

Certain types of all-male groups generally have higher rates of assault against women than the average, and their profile is unmistakable. They tend to include sports teams, fraternities, and military units, and they stress the physical subordination of others and exclusiveness.
Common sense tells me that "sport" in general is not the culprit in all of this so much as excessive celebration and rewarding of it: binge drinking, women-as-trophies, the hubris resulting from exaggerated entitlement and years of being let off the hook. We are hatching physically gifted young men in incubators of besotted excess and a vocabulary of "bitches and hos." |

Are these "bitches and hos" the same "bitches and hos" entitled to half a male athlete's assets? |

It's definitely true that divorce law is completely unjust. When divorcing, a couple's assets should be divided based on their earnings, with house wives (or house husbands) being treated as having brought income into the household based on the money saved by her (or him) not having a job. A spouse who stayed at home with children and housework all day as such could be considered to have saved on maid and daycare service and treated as such. If the children were cared for by a nanny and the housework was done by hired maids, on the other hand, the compensation of the "house spouse" would probably be zero. |

Because divorce court often times weighing in favor of women is exactly the same as a culture that ignores physical and sexual assault against women (or men but it's usually against women).

No, that analogy doesn't quite work. Try again. |

"Should women live in fear of male athletes?"
Uhh yeah they should, especially when they're tons of women lined up dating these guys. . .
It's amusing how the author pawns off all responsibility on men to fix this issue, as if it's all about gender and not human nature to get away with "murder", when one has the means. Money, status, fame, etc are the culprits.
This article is equally ridiculous as writing a piece about unsuccessful men not being surrounded by tons of gorgeous women. Epic fail feminists. |

Sometimes, when I'm really feeling lonely and worthless, I wish Ben Rothlesburger would take me to a bathroom stall... but only if it's the ladies room... I still have my dignity, damnit... |

One thing to keep in mind is that though this column shows an effort at research it is still one-sided. The author of the column has an opinion to get across. This is an opinion piece by the columnist, and so the balance of the column's argument is blatantly skewed whereas if this were to be a fair article piece the writer would have had to provide a counter argument.
Okay, J-student nerd-ism aside, as a woman I think the idea that the sport itself contributes to heightened risks for women is ridiculous.
I played hockey with boys/men for nearly ten years. I changed in the same dressing room for crying out loud! I got to meet their girlfriends and drink with them. Never was I treated with disrespect or did I see them treat their girlfriends with disrespect. The worst in my opinion were the jocular humor and dirty jokes behind the closed doors of the dressing room. Sometimes a random 'I'm gonna score on you' or 'I scored on you' on ice (I was a goaltender)
I think the silence in the cases the article mentioned are a case of the individuals own decisions and the bystander effect. You know when a hundred spectators can watch someone die but not one of them thinks to do anything.
I don't live in fear of athletes, but I am wary of jerks, and a man does not need to be an athlete to be a jerk. |

I was being sarcastic in my initial comment. It's a terrible analogy, one implied by CeleryMan. |
