...this much is free....
As far as I know, the only service provider is KT ("show"). I could be wrong but I don't think it's possible to just buy one outright and use it with prepaid service. You'll have to sign a two-year contract. That's a problem if you're here on an E2 visa, as those are one-year visas so as an untrustworthy transient, in the eyes of KT you'll be at risk of ducking out on your contract after one year.
The short version: find a Korean you trust (and who trusts you) and get the phone in his/her name... |

yeah, I know I can't get one on my own. I have only been here for 5 days, so I don't know anyone or think anyone would be comfortable doing that for me.
I can't believe how difficult it is to do. |

Yes you can get one on your own. BUT you have to pay a lot to get one.
Since you can't get a contract then you'll have to put up around 800,000 won for the phone and only then will they set you up.
Best if you can find a korean that will put the phone in their name.. pretty much your only option. |

Actually paying for the phone upfront and then paying for services is usually cheaper than getting the longterm plan. It's just easier to pay a monthly than to pay for the phone up front |

So you're saying paying 800k for a phone and then 45k per month or whatever for a plan is cheaper than paying 200k for the phone and 45k or whatever per month for service is somehow cheaper???? Do explain. |

You still need to pay payments on the phone. It is subsidized but you're stuck with on a set plan. Getting basic service and paying for usage generally tends to be less unless you really are usage up all of your prepaid minutes, texts and data. |

When I tried to get an iPhone with Show by paying for it upfront the charge was 700,000 for the iPhone and a one-year contract. Unfortunately I was already close to two months into my E2 visa so the system wouldn't accept my E2 expiration date in the system.
Also, the longer the contract, the more of a discount you get off your iPhone after the upfront payment. For a one-year contract the discount was 5,000 won/month but a two-year contract was 10,000won/month off your monthly plan. |
