So I guess this applies to people who were hired in Aug 09, or maybe everyone in SMOE as of now, but I've heard through my school, from the head office, that basically you have to work at the same school for 4 years before you can transfer.
4 YEARS!!!!!
Most people's entire career in Korea ain't that long! Did anyone else get this news? I know of at least 1-2 other people that have heard the same thing.... |

SMOE proving again that they care nothing for keeping their experienced teachers, and would rather swap them out with newbies fresh off the plane... |

Same policy exists for Korean teachers. Unfortunatly it doesn't take into account problem Korean co-teachers that drive Nets to request transfers.
Now Nets are at the mercy of their co-teachers. |

They never had a policy to begin with. Transferring was/is a lottery and a pretty bad one at that. |

Where do all these ridiculous rumors come from? The SMOE rumor mill seems to be running 24/7, 365 on super ultra mega overdrive with no signs of slow down. |

The overactive imagination of NSETs mixed with the almost absolute lack of proper communication from HQ? |

Yes, we were just informed 3.5 weeks or so ago that we now needed permission for taking on an after school class at another school.
The following was absolutely disproven when talking to immigration. It is SMOE's job to register place of employment not the teachers responsibility and actually when you read the law, your place of employment is SMOE not your local school. SMOE is the employer not the school. Funny how it works.
It would appear SMOE doesn't follow rules or understand them.
Clearly SMOE is negligent and as usually the recruiting office cares more about cutting corners and playing pass the buck. |

Which one's the truth? |
So when did SMOE get a FB page, and why would they not advertise the fact that they were making announcements on it??...
(Literally the first I've seen of them on Facebook... lol) |

Does it even matter, even their FACTS are misinformation.
"The min. of English Camps is 3 weeks.
After that, you can plan your vacation and get it approved by the school"
Um no, some schols run 0 weeks of camp up to 5 weeks, some schools wil not let you plan your vacation as there is no decision on your camp until like a week or two before term ends. And it could be middle 3 weeks, last 3, beginning 3.
"I know most would like to transfer at the end of the contract term but transfers are dependent of the school and district office."
This is a creative way of saying you are likely not getting transferred. The district offices are too busy planning excursions that mess up people's vacations ( ie the recent nambu debacle that has been talked about on here recently) to sign a paper giving someone a change of pace.
Basically there is nothing set in stone, even the stuff that is set in stone. Things happen on a whim, basically when the time comes, ask and see what the answer du jour is!
I wonder how they deal with " if you transfer me schools, I will stay, if you don't I am gone" |

I think its smart idea even though it sucks.
Most people are gone in 5 yrs anyway. Besides I've met tons of FTs that spent years bouncing around like pinballs before they realized they don't like teaching and or Korea and leave anyway. If you need an example, dig through any number of posts on Dave's
The worst thing for a school is if they get new, inexperienced FTs every year. Which they usually do since most FT's don't renew.
This is on par with the attrition rates of inner city schools back in the states. And its the students that suffer for it. |

and if some schools would treat their teachers with a little more respect, not expect them to be treated like uneducated lemmings, given vacation dates last minute, be made to work 5 weeks of camps, forced to work with nightmare co teachers with no support and no sympathy ( and any other number of things that MANY teachers in SMOE face) then many of these schools would not cycle through teachers as often as Larry KIng cycles thorugh wives.
I could not be happier at my school and would not want to change as it sits right now. BUt not every school principal understands that respect is a 2 way street. |
