"In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories."

Ok, I really have not watched the show much in the last few years, and when I did it seemed like some of the story lines had gotten pretty hokey. But back in the 90's, before the really good HBO and Showtime series like The Sopranos started coming out, Law and Order was probably the best drama on tv.

I especially liked Jerry Orbach and Sam Waterson, but there were a lot of big name stars who made cameos during their "salad days".

If it would have lasted one more season, it would have been the longest running drama ever. As it stands now, it will be tied with Gunsmoke. I'd say that's pretty good company.

I know I did not specifically ask for comments but I figured someone would say something about the passing of a show that was great in its heyday.

No wonder it got canceled!

It probably got canceled due to networks putting out more garbage than quality and the older folks that might watch that show are tuning into stuff like American Idol or Survivor, so thus we see more "reality" type shows and not enough good shows.

I still lament that Boston Legal got canceled last year.

Well, technically 2 years ago, and as much as I loved that show, it was getting old fast.

I was glad it ended on a high note, even if the last few episodes were terrible ( and the whole bankruptcy thing just sprung out of nowhere)

Thats one of the things that I find interesting about survivor, you have different people reacting to similar situations in some different and some similar ways. Its kind of like the "choose your own adventure" books. It is by no means "bad TV" Why is liking Alan Shore okay as a fictional character, but liking Russel Hantz as a fictional character bad?

I like smart TV. TV that makes me think. I have noticed that a lot of shows really dumb it down for the common person.

I recently (this year) watched all 7 seasons of NCIS. I thought the show was alright. Then I went back and watched an older type investigative show from the 1990s. When going back to NCIS I realized that show caters to the common person. They explain every little tidbit of what they are doing, like the audience are idiots. That 1990s show that I had watched let us, the audience figure out what they were doing, thus we had to use our brains. I don't see why NCIS has to explain after 7 seasons the same concepts over and over again. Smart people can figure it out.

Shows like Law and Order or Boston Legal were aimed at the smarter person, not the common joe who couldn't figure out their shoe laces were blue if not told so.

Shows like Survivor have no need for the audience to think. Also, what makes those shows worse in my opinion is we only get to see what the producers want us to see, so we get a totally biased view of what is happening.

I can not argue with the "dumb it down" argument, and for the most part I agree with you. What I like about survivor isnt so much the fact that it IS dumb down and presented in the biased view. We like to think about the "coulda, shoulda, and if only" game with it.

Part of the thing I like about survivor is talking with various people about it after and asking What did you think of that move etc"

Yes Tv has started to dumb down, but you can blame that on a number of things, writers strikes, bad writing in general, appealing to a wide variety of people, etc.

It again does not make survivior "bad tv"

And at least survivor doesnt need to "explain everything to you" Smile

For me, there are two types of TV show. There are long movies like The Wire and The Sopranos. These shows are almost more like novels than either TV or movies. You can interpret and read a lot into these show. They reward repeat viewing.

The second type is the junk. eg Survivor, NCIS(or any of the myriad of crime shows), Spartacus etc. 99.99% of all television, basically. These shows are good for a cheap thrill. But, you won't remember them in a few weeks time. They have their purpose and are still worthwhile.

My point is, that you shouldn't really compare the two. They aren't the same thing.

Totally fair comment.

Just as there used to be "pulp" reading and worthwhile novels. Some things simply MUST appeal to the lowest common denominator as the people who want high brow stuff often have other pursuits and don't watch as much TV.

I just wish there was more intelligent tv shows Sad

Arrested Development was a show I consider intelligent. You really had to think and be on your toes to get all the things the writers were throwing at you with that show, yet at the same time it was funny as hell.

BTW I wasn't putting down Survivor. I personally don't watch it because I feel it is fixed. I used to watch it the first four seasons or so until someone won who had should have absolutely not won it...that is when I started to think it was fixed. The outcome is known months before hand.
