Okay, yet another would-be-teaching-in-korea guy here. I've currently got my resume out to a recruiting company, but I could probably stand to look into more stuff. I even had an offer from one school a few months ago (much to my surprise!) but I didn't take it, as I wasn't quite ready to go off to Korea just yet.
So anyway, I understand that most schools now are recruiting for the fall semester. Great! However, there's some stuff I'd like to do here in the States in early September, and most places I've looked at so far start a ways before then.
So my question is, am I screwing myself over? Are there many places that will take people on in September/October? Or should I see if I can find a school that's more flexible in their dates? Or will it just be easier to hold out for a little longer and just do the Spring 2011 semester instead?
Thanks! |

IF you are looking for a pubic school position then you should be applying to the major programs in June for a mid-August start date.
If you don't care whether public or private or hakwon (language academy) then start applying about 60 days before you are ready to travel.
Most places in Korea only do their recruitment about 2 months before the required start date because they won't know until then whether or not their current staff will remain with them or need to be replaced (contractual issue).
Academies hire year round. Public schools typically hire in January for March 2 start dates and June for mid-August start dates.

piggybacking this.....
If I accept a position now, and have my interview at the consulate with visa in hand; I'm assuming this is possible this early -
Will I be allowed to fly from Europe (vacation) to Seoul, with my flight paid for from the EU? I will be working in SK as a US citizen. Will they only pay for my flight from where I accepted the position? I guess this is a question for the employer.
Anyone with a similar scenario? ever?
Also, OP - your chances are better for being hired for Sep now (60 days like Tom says), but I know public school positions are advertised all year long for reasons that are somewhat common. Runners, newbie not being able to hack it, terrible staff or students, family emergencies |

IF you are applying for many PS positions under CURRENT contracts then you NOW get a travel allowance in place of the airfare reimbursement so it doesn't matter where you fly from.
IF you are going to a private school or hakwon (language academy) then it is a contractual matter that you need to discuss with the employer.

I will add that the hakwon employer typically says they purchase a ticket from the international airport that is the closest to your home.
What you can do is go to Europe on your coin, vacation there, come back and fly to Korea on your employers ticket from the airport that is closest to your home.
You can also ask your employer to book a ticket from the EU if the cost is the same as a ticket from the US.
Public school positions may be offered piecemeal all year long but as Tom said, Public Schools typically hired in the early winter for the March start of the school year or in late spring for the September start. All the major programs (EPIK) only hire once a year. |
