|
|
Here is the deal. I've been working a Gepik job since March 2. I've got a co-teacher I really don't like. He micro-mangages me and does stuff like call me "pig teacher." The thing is, he's pretty connected into Gepik. So I know if I quit, I wouldn't be getting any benefit of the doubt.
One of my friends has a hagwon, and she's never had a native speaker but she'd really like to hire me. Since my co-teacher is such a jerk, I'm really entertaining the idea of quitting, and going to work at the hagwon.
I'm not to worried about going to the hagwon, but I am worried if I'll be screwed at Immigration. I've heard they frown on quitting public school jobs, and they really don't like it if you go to a hagwon from a public.
I know I can get some really nice perks if I take the hagwon job, but I'm afraid that Immigration might block my visa. Anyone have any experience with this? |

I'll address the second issue first. Immigration can't block or force anything. Your visa will have to be canceled or you will have to transfer it. You might be able to transfer after 6 months, I haven't tried it yet. Be a nice incompetent teacher who tries their best but just can't quite get the hang of what your school wants you to do.
Eventually, the school will get tired of it and let you go. After they let you go, you need to bite your lip on the first issue and ride it out. DON'T SAY ANYTHING BAD. Keep a low profile, and this time do your job right. Get the visa transfer, and go to your new school. Otherwise, you will need to leave the country and get your documents sorted. If you prefer that, get your CRC ordered up. It should be good for 6 months.
Now for the first issue. If you aren't going to leave, you can make their job (the co-teacher's) a lot more hellish than they can with you. One of the biggest things you can do to hurt yourself is accept the room they put you 2 together in. Just like they don't like to see you eating alone, they want you bonded somehow to your co-teacher. So, refuse to plan lessons or sit in any designated "Teacher's Office" or "Teacher's Room". Go straight to a classroom, and do your job. Be on time, but don't put up with the crap. If there is a meeting, go to the bathroom a few minutes before. Avoid "cohesiveness" at all costs. This may sound silly, but it actually works, eventually they will just give up. Replacing you isn't worth it to them, and then when things change for the better you need to change also back to a "normal" teacher.
I don't quite understand the pig comment. Can you explain why they said it or why you didn't find out? Personally, if that happened to me, I would wait until parents who could understand English were around and then in a loud voice interrogate him. Watch him run to the teacher's room |

Quit Gepik today and go to Fukuoka for a couple of days of partying and
sightseeing. Come back on a tourist visa and work at the hagwon under
the table until it is possible to apply for another visa. |

If you want to be sane at the end of it and at the same time not break any laws do the following.
Give your 30 days notice and in your resignation letter put exactly why you are quitting and if possible have the principal sign/stamp a copy (tell them it's for immigration purposes). Have your hogwon friend write it for you in Korean. While you are waiting your 30 days make sure you are getting all new documents ready for the new visa. When your 30 days are over cancel your visa and have your new boss apply for another.
Please remember that you will have to repay your settlement allowance and your air ticket.
Good luck! |

This is just stupid (not to mention illegal).
IF you want to quit, then quit.
Give your notice so you get your deposit back. (also gives you time to get your new set of visa documents in order)
Now the FACTS.
You have 14 days AFTER your last day of work to:
a) report to immigration that you have quit (report of a material change in your visa status)
OR
b) to leave the country.
IF (a) you report to immigration and tell them that you quit they will give you an exit order allowing you 30 days from your last date of work to leave the country (and cancel your visa status).
During that 30 days you can (through your new employer) apply for a new visa confirmation number. You WILL need a full and complete set of new documents.
When you obtain the visa confirmation number, do your visa run to Japan, return and start your new job.

With GEPIK you are better off not having your contract re-newed. The best way to acheive this is to actually teach rather than edutain. They'll tell you you are too boring and replace you with a dancing money |

Thanks all.
A couple of things. First, my contract say I should give a 60 day notice.
Also, I was planning on going home in late July, so I was going start after that. While I was home I was going to do my CRC and all that.
Do you really think I should list my complaints on the letter of resignation? I feel like I'd be better served if I came up with some story about how I got some great offer, or that I need to be closer to the city. You know, save face.
Plus, I'm doing grad school here in Korea, so I need to keep that in mind with my time frame.
Again, thanks for the advice. |

I don't think it would be unreasonable for you to insist that he act like an adult, of you will file a complaint with your head office. |

I talked to the co-ordinator about it at orientation. She knows him personally, and told me I'd get used to his style of humor. |

Damn..you're just gonna let some ajosshi call you a pig...and let him get away with it..Waygooks these days I tell you. I would have just knocked him out...but thats just me.
I know some of you are gonna come back with "What about the 합의금"(blood money) Waygooks can't win in a physical fight." I understand that..so another course of action I would undertake would be to call him every Korean swear and cuss word I know (and I know alot). |

Good call tough guy. Too bad this ajosshi is 182 CM and ripped. He'd whoop the crap out of me.
Like I said, I'm doing grad school here, so I've better things to do than try to get kicked out of the country. But, yeah, thanks for the advice. |

WHy does everyone think that someone who is "ripped" or spends a lot of time in the gym can kick ass. Yeah it does give an advantage...but like the Drill Instructor from "Full Metal Jacket" said.."It's a hard heart that kills" But I digress...Thing is this guy is punkin' you up and down..and you aren't going to do anything about it. I've taken an azz beating here and there bro...sometimes you gotta stand up for yourself. But what do I know..I grew up on the streets. |

Congrats on growing up on the streets. I grew up on a dirt road, where's my cookie?
You do understand how stupid it would be for me to get into a fist fight with my co-teacher right? Don't get me wrong, sometimes I want to bash his head into a wall, but that's a dumb dumb move. |

Then document the "pig teacher" comment and file it in writing with her boss. You don't have to put up with bullying in the workplace. |
