They have an out PROVIDED you have worked at a public school before AND transfered to this position.
If you are on a new visa they have NO excuse to not pay.
You are entitled to your settlement allowance. COMPLAIN TO GEPIK!!!
. |
Last year I worked at a hagwon, but I did have my visa extended. I'm not a on a new visa.
Having said that, my contract says that they should pay provided it is my first year with GEPIK.
A friend of my is a Korean English teacher at a nearby school. She's going to look it up in the manual tomorrow and let me know. |

Nope... the ONLY out they have is if it is an extended/transferred visa FROM another public school AND you have previously received the 300k allowance.
Call GEPIK... that is YOUR money. |

Damn..you're just gonna let some ajosshi call you a pig...and let him get away with it. Waygooks these days I tell you. I would have just knocked him out...but thats just me.
I know some of you are gonna come back with "What about the 합의금"(blood money) Waygooks can't win in a physical fight." I understand that..so another course of action I would undertake would be to call him every Korean swear and cuss word I know (and I know alot). |
X f'in 2, and that ain't no joke.
You need to develop your death stare or something. Before the threats of physical violence (and perhaps follow-through) begins, however, you first could have started with a simple question:

I don't get it. If you've got a degree then you're as well educated as the majority of people on this board. If you don't have a degree, then you're working in Korea illegally and people are as likely to feel bad about it as much as they feel about drug dealers making a lot of money. |
Well Eddie...if you were to make an educated guess...which would it be? Do I have a degree...or am I an illegal? |

Just a little update.
My co-teacher forgot to get me my 300,000 settlement money and now the school doesn't want to pay for it. They said because I came to the job from within Korea, they shouldn't have to pay me.
I was supposed to get it within 15 days (per my contract), and now it's been three months. He told me that I needed to find a way to solve this problem, because if he get's audited, he's in trouble.
Thoughts? |
First he calls you names...then he pushes you around...now he's taking your money (more or less) Jesus guy...what's next? I feel like going down to your school and putting him in the cripple crossface just on principle alone. You need to square this guy away man. |

This is the guy who's calling you pig teacher, yes?
In that case just smile at him and say "So YOU get in trouble...how is that MY problem?" |

I know what you talkin 'bout, but sadly soon after I posted that clip Gary Coleman went to that Great Mr. Drummond's House in the sky. Sad - he was only 42.
BTW, OP - are you still getting crap at work? Maybe you should make up a creative new handle to use for the adjeoshi jerk when you're with him. Like maybe "Jerk".
(I'm tired so I can't come up with anything else right now.) |

Just an update. I now have the contract from the hagwon, and I will be giving my notice on Thursday.
Must I give them a full 60 days? I ask, because the hagwon wants me to start by Aug 2, for intensives. If I wait 60 days, will I then need to wait longer to process the new visa?
If I cut it before the 60 days, they can keep my 900,000 deposit, right?
If I want to leave before the 60 days, how can I do it?
This situation is complicated by the fact that I'm doing grad school now, and I'm knee deep in school work. I guess as the Koreans would say, fighting |

Yeah the Koreans say 화이팅/fighting but I think you should be saying...."running." |
