I think maybe it was a breakdown in the power structure in North Korea, or maybe a rogue submarine commander who did it. Perhaps there was some kind of internal power struggle. But I just don't see that they would purposely do that.
Maybe if Kim Jong Il is VERY close to death they would do it on purpose to bolster support for the regime. Otherwise I just don't see why. |

A significant amount of Koreans, maybe as much as 30-40%, don't believe that the North Koreans did sink the Cheon-an.
Conspiracy theories abound. |

This is totally possible. It's foolish to think it couldn't happen. It could be another fabricated incident just like 9/11 for sure. |

Yep!
But I do have some back-up.......the BBC interviewed 5 Seoulites and two of them didn't believe NK did it....plus I had drinks last night with two of my neighbors, Korean men in their 40's, and neither of them believe NK did it. They told me that many Koreans believe that 2MB is doing a 'wag the dog' to bolster his popularity. |

Lots of Koreans see North Korea as their brothers, and they don't want to view their brothers as the enemy.
So they look for another country, another people to blame. Another people to hate instead of hating their own. |

Every sub around the world should be staffed with a Denzel Washingtonian XO to say, "Bitch, be cool" whenever a skipper tries to fire on another ship. I think it's more likely a rogue commander did it or a commander who, because of their antiquated tech could not reach the proper channels made a bad call.
Either way, if the North really wanted to attack they wouldn't start with this, giving the USFK and the rest of the international community a MONTH to gear up and get ready. |

While Crimson Tide was in fact an awesome movie, I think Samuel L. Jackson would do a much better job of saying "Bitch,by cool" ala Pulp Fiction... |

It was definately revenge for an earlier sea encounter that embarassed NK. By denying it, NK can have their revenge without losing face to both its own people and the rest of the world. Remember, NK brands the US as warmongers, so it wouldnt look good to the people of North Korea if NK attacked a SK ship unprovoked.
There has so far been an international investigation which has convincing evidence of a NK torpedo attack, as well as NK defectors who report that the attack was ordered. Various promotions in NK military around the time of the attack are also suspicious in nature. It seems VERY likely that it was in fact a NK torpedo that sank the Cheonan. |

There's also been some discussion that the SK navy had gotten fairly lax and thus the Cheonan was an easy target. |

I agree with this and said it on relevant thread in the current events forum. It was an accidental sinking by a south-Korean ship which "fired in the direction of the north" at what they thought was a North Korean ship violating their waters, but was actually one of their own.
Its been absent from the media (as far as I have seen) any discussion about what was hbeing reported in the days after the accident that some other South Korean ship that was firing off shots toward the north. I've heard nothing about whether they were firing at a ship, a sub, whether or not they hit anything...etc.
I'm probably wrong (not surprising) but it is just as likely to me that a S. Korean warship fired on a ship it mistook for a N. Korean ship on their side of the unknown line as much as it is that N. Korea has the audacity to fire on a S. Korean vessel on the southern side of that line. |

That's a good idea. Want to sleep on guard duty? Well, I'll just kill you and make an example of you. Anyone else want to sleep? I didn't think so. |
